Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response attempts to discuss both views regarding whether history or science and technology are more important school subjects, but the treatment of the prompt is extremely superficial. Crucially, the length requirement of 250 words is not met, as the student's response contains only 160 words. This substantial under-length severely limits the development of ideas. While the writer touches upon the reasoning behind history and science, the position is difficult to discern due to fragmented thoughts and a lack of clear argumentation. Sentences such as 'The science are provide all soultions' illustrate undeveloped and generalized assertions. Consequently, the response addresses the task only partially, aligning with the criteria for Band 4.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

Coherence and cohesion are severely compromised throughout the text. The response lacks proper paragraphing, presenting ideas in a single block or disjointed fragments with erratic spacing. Logical organisation and progression are absent; ideas jump abruptly from history to science and back without clear transitions. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, as seen in repetitive structures like 'The subject of science... and the science are...'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought. These issues reflect a level of cohesion that falls well below Band 5.0, earning a Band 3.5 descriptor profile, which we will record as Band 4.0 based on available whole/half increments, though the structural flow remains at Band 4.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and heavily constrained. Words like 'history', 'science', 'problem', and 'information' are repeated constantly without varied synonyms. There are also numerous spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'technilogy', 'histrical', 'coumpter', and 'soultions'. The student attempts some less common terms, but these are marred by inaccuracies that strain the reader's comprehension. The range of vocabulary is limited and inadequate for academic writing, reflecting the descriptors for Band 4.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying on basic, repetitive sentence patterns ('The reason history subject are...', 'The subject of science and technology are...'). There is a total lack of complex sentence control, and grammatical accuracy is very poor. Subject-verb agreement errors are pervasive, such as 'the history subject are', 'the science are proved', and 'science are provide'. Punctuation is also heavily flawed, with random spacing before periods and commas. Errors are frequent and constantly distort meaning, placing this writing firmly in Band 4.0.
