Student answer (Band 6.0)

History is regarded as one of the most important school subjects primarily becuase of the awareness, it spreads among the children from the very early age about the invaluable learning outcomes drawn from a nation's past. While learning about history is important, I believe that Science and Technology are more important to study because of the greater relevance they hold in today's world. This essay will describe both the views and highlight why science and technology hold greater importance than history.

Every child should be aware about the past achievements and learnings of its country. Studying history in school instills the feeling of patriotism in a child from the very early age. For example, in India, a lot of children get influenced by the history of it and later join military and politics. Learning about the great kings and leaders of a country can also develop strong leadership and philanthropic qualities in a child. But, in today's world, which is primarily driven by technology, history is getting less and less relevant in the professions that a child pursue later in its life.

The world today, is witnessing the emerging influence of artificial intelligence in not just the profession of tech but also in various professions whether it is law and crime, medicine, finance, research and also in basic works of day to day life. A lot of children go on to pursue a career related to science and technology after their graduation today. Technology is almost inevitable today in all areas. For example, recently there was a writers' strike in Hollywood becuase of the increasing use and influence of AI in cinema. People today are almost slaves of technology and therefore parents and teachers often put more pressure on children to excel in this subject rather than in history.

While Learning about the history often instills great values in children and is one of the most important factors that makes children feel longing about their country, growing relevance and usefulness overall makes science and technology more important than histroy as school subjects today.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the importance of history for patriotism and values, and the dominance of science and technology in the modern world—while also presenting a clear personal opinion. However, some ideas remain under-developed. For instance, the example regarding students in India joining the military and politics is stated rather than fully extended, and the claim that people are 'slaves of technology' is presented as a sweeping generalization without deeper elaboration. To reach a higher level, each main body paragraph would need to delve deeper into its arguments with more thorough, well-supported analysis rather than broad assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main paragraph focusing on a distinct view. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'While learning about history', 'For example', and 'The world today', though some transitional links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional over-reliance on simple connectors prevents the flow from feeling entirely natural and seamless. Improving the variety and subtlety of cohesive devices would elevate this aspect of the writing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'philanthropic qualities', 'inevitable', and 'artificial intelligence'. However, there are some noticeable spelling errors, such as 'becuase' instead of 'because', and minor word choice or prepositional collocation slips, such as 'awareness, it spreads among the children' where the intrusive comma disrupts lexical flow. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from achieving greater precision and naturalness. Expanding the repertoire of sophisticated lexical phrases and ensuring accurate spelling would enhance this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses such as 'While learning about history is important, I believe that Science and Technology are more important...' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including unnecessary commas (e.g., 'The world today, is witnessing') and occasional awkward pronoun referencing or article omissions (e.g., 'in professions that a child pursue later in its life'). Fortunately, these grammatical slips are infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without difficulty. A wider variety of fully error-free complex structures would help push the writing toward higher bands.
