Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's contemporary world, a certain number of individuals contemplate that History is an essential school subjects, while others believe that Science and technology are more important than History. I firmly support the latter view; however, both perspectives will be discussed in the upcoming paragraphs.

Supporters of the first school of thoughts claim that history is an important subject because it represents the cultural heritage of the country. This is to say that in every country, there are some cultural valueas and rituals, which are related to the past events. Moreover, by taking part in a course like History children know about the sacrifies made by their ancestors and political leaders in the initial times. Therefore, it is necessary for students to study History subject in schools.

While critics of the aforementioned view, including me advocates that in this swift era Science and technology are the most important topics of study. Firstly, by studying subjects like science and technology students can establish high paying jobs in the future. To clarify, these courses will teach the practical skills and their implementation in real life to the students, which will enhance their knowledge. In addition, the demand of science and technology is increasing dramatically. Needless to say, they can implement their skills and they can take part in the future workforece.

In conclusion, although it is necessary to know about the past events, cultural values and hardwork of our ancestors, I think learning subjects like Science and technology will teach practical skills and provide them with better opportunities for the future. Therefore, studying Science and technoloy are more beneficial for students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the importance of History versus Science and technology, and clearly states the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the arguments regarding the career benefits of science and technology are somewhat elaborated, the reasoning behind the importance of history, such as cultural heritage and ancestors' sacrifices, remains rather general and under-developed. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to fully extend and support all main ideas with more specific details or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, as each paragraph has a distinct focus starting from the introduction to the body paragraphs and conclusion. The writing demonstrates elements of the next band through logical sequencing and clear progression throughout the response. However, cohesion relies on somewhat mechanical transitions, such as 'Firstly,' 'In addition,' and 'To clarify,' and referencing is not always completely clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions feel entirely natural and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'contemporary world,' 'cultural heritage,' and 'workforce.' However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as writing 'an essential school subjects' (plural mismatch) and 'establish high paying jobs' instead of 'secure' or 'obtain.' Additionally, spelling slips occur, such as 'valueas' and 'sacrifies.' These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a level where vocabulary control is still developing. Expanding precision in word choice and ensuring correct word forms will help elevate this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively constructing multi-clause sentences like 'while critics of the aforementioned view, including me advocates that...' Although there are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('critics... advocates') and minor prepositional or article slips, they are infrequent and rarely impede communication. The punctuation is generally adequate. To move further up, the writer should aim for a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine grammatical control over more intricate sentence structures.
