Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the importance of history versus science and technology subjects, and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas presented are generally relevant, such as how history reflects culture and how science fosters sustainable technologies. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the point about avoiding past mistakes through historical study is introduced but lacks a concrete example to substantiate it. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to fully develop all main ideas with more robust supporting arguments and specific examples throughout the body paragraphs, ensuring every point is explored to its fullest potential.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, with each body paragraph focusing on one side of the argument. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'On one side', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the text. However, cohesion sometimes feels a bit mechanical or repetitive in its transitional phrasing, and referencing can occasionally be slightly unclear, such as pronoun use referring back to abstract concepts. To progress further, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences without relying on formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'diversifying', 'sustainable', and 'contemporary'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout the response. Examples include spelling errors like 'genral', 'subjecs', 'prespectives', 'improtance', 'understant', 'distruction', 'Consecquently', 'tecnology', 'developmet', 'duue', 'fule', 'preferd', 'mordern', and 'ech', alongside awkward phrasing like 'economic concentration'. These errors occur with some frequency and occasionally require the reader to pause, though they do not completely impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, improve spelling accuracy, and demonstrate more precise control over word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors present, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Subjects like Science and technology is' or pronoun references), incorrect article usage, and awkward prepositional patterns. Despite these errors, the sentence structures are varied enough, and the mistakes rarely impede overall communication. To move to the next level, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences by exercising greater control over complex sentence patterns, punctuation, and basic grammatical rules such as pluralisation and article selection.
