IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

One school of thought believes that History is the most important subject in a school while the other school of thought believes that Science and Technology supercede History in terms of relevance. I agree with both the statements.

History is a subject that gives students the context of the world from before they existed. It introduces them to the evolution of mankind and the journey of their struggles. People in every century faced different problems and found a solution to them for us to be where we are. For instance, Freedom fighters in every country fight for the independence of that nation from the ruling country. The literature, art and text from that era has helped us know about the History of our country. I believe that its important for the youth to read about the past in order to respect the sacrifices and learn from the mistakes of people.

On the other hand, Science and technology are the future. These are subjects that could employ the highest number of students because of the demand generated. For example, students who are equipped with STEM skills in school tend to be more future proof because of the advent of technology. Science has seen a tremendous growth as a field over the years with the succesful landing of Chandrayan in Mars which opens the path for so many career options which makes science the most preffered stream.

To recapitulate, i believe that past and the future should go hand in hand with the present and hence students should learn from the mistakes of the past and implement them in the present while learning about the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the importance of school subjects and presenting your own opinion, earning you a solid score in this area. You outline the arguments for History, such as understanding the evolution of mankind, and the arguments for Science and Technology, such as career opportunities and future-proofing. However, some of your ideas remain under-developed. For instance, your explanation of how freedom fighters impact history is brief and lacks sufficient expansion. Furthermore, stating 'I agree with both the statements' at the end of the introduction is slightly contradictory to traditional discussion formats, though you manage to balance both viewpoints in the body paragraphs. To move to a higher level, you should ensure that all main ideas are fully extended with deeper explanations and more specific, well-elaborated examples rather than stopping short after a single sentence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from your introduction through to your conclusion. You successfully use paragraphing to separate your ideas, dedicating individual paragraphs to History, Science and Technology, and your summary. Cohesive devices are employed to link your thoughts together, such as 'On the other hand' and 'To recapitulate'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive. For example, the transition into your examples relies heavily on phrases like 'For instance' and 'For example', and certain sentences lack smooth connective tissue between them. Additionally, minor referencing issues, such as the lowercase 'i' in the conclusion, slightly disrupt the flow. To achieve a higher standard, you should vary your cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that every paragraph moves fluidly into the next without relying on predictable signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'supercede', 'evolution of mankind', and 'future proof'. Your spelling is generally accurate, and your word choices communicate your meaning clearly without impeding the reader. However, there are noticeable limitations and occasional inaccuracies in word choice and spelling. For instance, you wrote 'Chandrayan in Mars' instead of 'Chandrayaan on Mars', misspelled 'successful' as 'succesful', and misspelled 'preferred' as 'preffered'. Furthermore, the phrase 'supercede' is slightly misused in this context regarding relative importance. To reach the next band, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, demonstrate stronger control over less common collocations, and eliminate spelling and word-form errors entirely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas which showcases a reasonable structural variety. You demonstrate good control over basic grammar, and your sentences are generally structured well enough that errors rarely impede communication. Nevertheless, several grammatical and punctuation errors persist throughout the text. For example, there are missing articles and capitalization errors, such as starting a sentence directly after a period without a space ('ruling country. The literature'), capitalizing 'History' unnecessarily in the middle of sentences, and failing to capitalize the pronoun 'I' in the conclusion ('i believe'). There is also a missing plural in 'both the statements'. To attain a higher band, you must produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine your punctuation and article usage.
