IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
There is a variety of opinions on whether a subject should be offered in an educational institution. Some have opinion that teaching history in a school is important as it makes children aware about their heritage and culture while other say that learning about the modern technology with broad range of applications for society is more important than being aware of history. I think that choice should be open for the student after they take demo classes to decide which is more interesting for them.
Those who are in the favor of teaching history in the school present an opinion that studying heritage and tradition is important to be connected to the society and should be necessary for people who want to pursue careers in society centric roles like politicians. They can make decisions and policies about people and society by comparing its benefits and adverse effects on society values and cultural heritage. For examples, all current ongoing issues in the world have some link to the history and can be solved by using that connection including Kashmir and Palestine issues.
On the other hand, people who are in the favor of teaching technical subjects at learning institutions argue that learning these subjects with wider range of modern applications will help students making a career in a field which build technology for the advancement of society. For example, Microsoft has more impact on global society than most of individual states as it serves almost every person who is linked to the modern society in some way.
In my opinion, both subjects are important and necessary for the society. Every school should offer a demo class of each subject in the first week of academic year and every student should decide the selection of a subject after taking demo class based on own interest. Despite the importance of subject alone, it is necessary for the student to be competent in the subject and able to drive value for the society which is only possible if the person studying is interested and become skilled in the topic. For example, if Newton or some other scientist was forced to study history, he might not be able to bring as much value to the society as he did through science.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear personal position: you argue that both subjects matter, while students should choose according to their interests. The history paragraph explains how historical knowledge may inform political decisions, and the technology paragraph gives Microsoft as an example of modern influence. These relevant points meet the task well. However, the discussion is not equally developed: the technology argument is brief, and the proposal for students to choose after demo classes becomes the main focus of your opinion rather than a fuller comparison of the subjects’ value. The examples about Kashmir and Palestine are also asserted without explaining the historical connection. Develop each side with a specific, explained example and make the comparison behind your opinion more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding paragraph with your opinion. Signposting such as “On the other hand” helps readers follow the shift between positions, and the examples generally appear alongside the relevant claims. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence about whether a subject should be offered does not directly introduce the debate, and “Those who are in the favor” is repeated in similar form across the two body paragraphs. The final paragraph also combines your position, the demo-class proposal, and the Newton example without clearly separating their roles. Use more direct topic sentences and make the relationship between each claim and its example explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “heritage,” “cultural heritage,” “policies,” “applications,” and “advancement of society.” These choices allow you to discuss both historical and technical education, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several awkward or imprecise collocations and word forms, such as “aware about their heritage,” “society centric roles,” and “help students making a career.” “Current ongoing issues” is also repetitive, while “drive value” is not a natural expression in this context. Aim for more idiomatic academic phrasing and check whether each word combines naturally with the words around it. This would make your ideas sound more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses with “while,” conditional phrasing with “if,” and relative clauses such as “which is only possible if…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and the range is appropriate for discussing reasons and examples. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “Some have opinion” needs an article or plural form, “other say” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “help students making” uses an incorrect verb pattern. In “a field which build technology,” the verb does not agree with its subject. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction in “based on own interest.” Review agreement, articles, and verb patterns, then proofread longer sentences to improve accuracy while retaining your complex structures.
