Student answer (Band 6.5)
People debate whether history is one of the most important school subjects, or that in today's world subjects like science and technology are more important than history. In this regards, this essay will discuss not only both perspectives but also my personal opinion which is in favour of the latter argument with a relevant conclusion.
To commence with, History has been an exceptionally important subject over the years, it provides us with great knowledge of the past and the lives of our ancestors, it gives detail on various world events that shaped the world forvever. To explain it, we can learn about the lives of great scholars and emperors, like the roman rulers, Marcus Aurelius and Augustus Caesar who ruled during the golden age of Rome. Secondly, it provides us with accounts of great thinkers, like Aristotle, Plato and Socrates, which is the very basis of our modern civilization. Moreover, history gives us information on various discoveries like medicine, and also provides views on warfare over the years. For example, history teaches us about the two world wars, and the destruction caused by them, it serves as a warning to avoid such blunders in the future, that have costed millions of lives in the past.
However, in the modern world, science and technology has become immensly useful due to several reasaons. The first and foremost is that science helps us to innovate further and plan for the future, inventing new pieces of high end technology that helps in development. For an epitome, it helps greatly in economic growth, being a vast portion and sector of a nation's gross domestic product. Apart from this, science leads the world to greatness by achieving new heights in various work spaces, that were unheard of before. To clarify it, humans have become space explorers and have set foot on the moon thanks to science and technological innovation. In addition, technology offers great help to the healthcare industry, in creating vaccines and researching for new cures and antidotes for different diseases and animal bites. Thus, my stance aligns with the latter point of view that while history is important, science and technology are necessary and can be considered more important, as they help in building the future, through substantial efforts and breakthroughs in human capabilities.
In conclusion, although history is an essential subject, and has few benefits, science and technology are economically and statistically more important, and relevant at present.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear preference for science and technology in the introduction and conclusion. The history paragraph gives relevant support through examples of Roman rulers, classical thinkers and the world wars; the warning about conflict explains why historical knowledge matters. The science paragraph also develops several reasons, including economic growth, space exploration and healthcare. This range of relevant support and a consistent position fit the task well. Some claims, however, are broad or not fully explained—for instance, describing science as a large part of GDP does not show precisely how this makes it more important as a school subject. Develop the comparison more directly by explaining the benefits to students and society of studying each subject.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each viewpoint and a conclusion. The contrast between the two main body paragraphs is easy to follow, and signposts such as “However,” “Secondly” and “In addition” help show the sequence of points. This establishes logical progression, while the half-step beyond a basic arrangement is visible in the clear paragraphing and range of linking expressions. At times, though, the links feel formulaic, and some sentences join several separate ideas with commas, making the progression less controlled. For example, the history paragraph moves from rulers to thinkers, discoveries and wars without clearly grouping these points. Use fewer stock transitions and make the relationship between each example and its main claim explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “ancestors,” “economic growth,” “gross domestic product,” “innovation” and “breakthroughs.” These choices help you discuss both historical knowledge and modern developments. You also attempt more formal or less common expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural in context: “for an epitome” does not introduce an example, “costed millions of lives” is not the appropriate collocation, and “researching for new cures” is awkward. There are also spelling errors, including “immensly” and “reasaons.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and control. Prefer familiar, accurate academic phrasing and check spelling and collocations carefully before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses introduced by “although,” “while” and “that,” and most ideas remain understandable. However, some errors in sentence boundaries, agreement and clause construction reduce accuracy. The opening of the history paragraph joins independent clauses with commas: “History has been an exceptionally important subject over the years, it provides us…”; these should be separated or linked with a conjunction. Agreement is also inconsistent in “science and technology has become” and “technology that helps,” where the subject is plural. In “which is the very basis,” the reference to several thinkers is unclear. To improve, check each sentence for a complete structure, match verbs to their subjects, and use punctuation to separate complete clauses.
