Student answer (Band 5.5)

Most people believe that history is the most important school subject, while other think that science and technology are more important in today's world. I believe that by studying history we can learn about our past but science and technology is more essential for the career of the students.

On the one hand, some people believe that history is one of the most important school subjects. If a student start studying the subject of the history he can learn about the past of their country, their culture and also their traditions. Furthermore, the knowledge of the history is also very important sometimes this type of information is require in the field of media and CSS. For instance, if we study history we can know about the wars which happened in the past and also the history subject told us that how difficult was the lives of other people.

On the other hand, most people think that science and technology are more important than history. If we want a successful career science and technology is the much better option. The field of science and technology is already very advanced that people are learning and earning high pays. For example, if a student study the subjects of science and technology he can be a good developer and made changes in the field of medicine.

To conclude, I believe that both of the subjects have their own importance but it is much essential to study the subject of science and technology for better future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both perspectives and state a clear preference: history helps students understand the past, while science and technology are more useful for careers. The examples about wars, media/CSS, and becoming a developer or contributing to medicine are relevant, but they are brief and some claims—such as science and technology being “the much better option”—need explanation or qualification. The conclusion repeats your view without adding much synthesis. The response is also 16 words below the required 250-word minimum; this limits the space available to develop your reasons. To strengthen the response, explain more fully how historical knowledge benefits society and why scientific study supports future employment, using specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each viewpoint, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and ideas within paragraphs are not always linked smoothly. For example, the move from learning about culture and traditions to information needed in “media and CSS” is abrupt, while the final sentence of the history paragraph introduces past hardships without explaining their connection to the main point. Use linking phrases that show cause, contrast, or consequence, and develop each paragraph around a clear central reason. This would make the progression more natural and the relationships between examples and claims clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “culture,” “traditions,” “career,” “developer,” and “medicine.” However, the range is limited, with repeated use of “important,” “subject,” and “science and technology.” Some word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, such as “high pays,” “the field of the history,” and “made changes in the field of medicine.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but they reduce precision and fluency. Aim to use more varied terms for educational value and employment, and check whether words naturally combine in English. More precise phrasing would also help you explain the benefits of each subject without repeating the same general claims.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If we want a successful career…” and clauses beginning with “while” and “which.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward. Examples include “other think” instead of “others think,” “If a student start” instead of “If a student starts,” and “science and technology is” where a plural verb is needed. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction, as in “the subject of the history” and “this type of information is require.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and article use, then vary your sentence patterns while keeping each sentence controlled and clear.
