IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
History is the knowledge of the past events and what have people done in the previous years. Moreover,History is important to appreciate and to be gratefull for what we have right now, because without the past there is no present, and without present there is no future. However it is important, We do not need to overrate it above more important subjects such as science and technology and mathemathics which are way important for the developement of the world. For example to learn about new robotics technology such as lidar and advanced camera we need to come back in the science of history to learn what have been made in the past in order to learn the mistakes of our previous generation of scientists,But putting so much effort and focus on history is exagerrating, Learning the past and history does not benefit that much.
In my opinion, I think that the balance between giving a slight importance to history but focusing mainly in the more important subjects such as physics, mathemathics and science is the key to move forward. But neglecting one of them is a big mistake,For example to learn about a new mathemathical algorithm we need to take a step back to study what the previous scientists have done and how can we enhance it.
In the end one arm can not clap, We need the science of hsitory to support the other subjects such as physics,For example to study projectile motion we need to go back in history and see what isaac newten said and discover.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a relevant opinion: history has value, but science, technology and mathematics should receive greater emphasis. The examples involving robotics and projectile motion also connect history with scientific progress. However, the discussion of the view that history is important is brief, and the opposing view is asserted more than explained. For instance, “Learning the past and history does not benefit that much” is not supported with a reason, while the benefits of science are mostly described in general terms. Your position is present, but phrases such as “a slight importance” leave its precise meaning unclear. Develop both sides with specific reasons and explain how each example supports your argument; this would make the response more complete and convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an identifiable overall shape: an opening discussion, a paragraph stating your opinion, and a concluding point. Linking expressions such as “However,” “For example,” and “In the end” help signal relationships between ideas. Nevertheless, progression is uneven: the first paragraph moves quickly from the value of history to science, then returns to history through the robotics example. The second paragraph repeats the balance argument without adding much development, and the conclusion introduces another example rather than clearly summarising the discussion. Some transitions are also awkwardly attached to sentences, and capitalisation and spacing around punctuation make the flow harder to follow. Use clearer paragraph purposes and connect each example directly to the point it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “robotics technology,” “algorithm,” “projectile motion,” and “previous scientists,” showing an attempt to discuss the subject specifically. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “important,” “history,” and “learn,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “overrate it,” “a slight importance,” and “one arm can not clap.” Spelling errors—including “mathemathics,” “developement,” “exagerrating,” and “hsitory”—are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the writing. Aim for more precise academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. A wider range of expressions for importance, historical evidence, and scientific progress would help you explain your ideas more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “without,” and “in order to.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some passages difficult to follow. For example, “what have people done” uses an incorrect question-style word order in a statement, while “what have been made” and “how can we enhance it” have similar problems. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “the science of hsitory” and the long opening sequence joined with commas. Practise accurate indirect questions and clause structure, and divide long sentences into shorter, correctly punctuated units.
