Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an everyday on going debate where some people stand by their opinion that history is the most important academic subject while others agree that science and technology is the most significant one. I concur with the notion that both these subjects are very important and have their own pros and cons.

To initiate with science and technology, we can say that in today's life which is heavily influenced by technology one cannot survive without knowing about modern science. All the important things in our life including our luxury houses, workplaces and travel machines includes science and technology significantly. While choosing subject in nowadays academic studies it is very important for a student to select science and technology because there are far more job opportunities in fields that are related to modern day science for example agriculture industry, hospitals, automobile industries, food industries and others.

On the contrary side, History is also very major subject of school studies because it is also very significant for a student to have knowledge about the past era's as one can choose an ideal role model from past. The information about famous ancient personalities can also help a modern day teenager to observe the qualities of such persons who left a deep mark in the whole world. This can help students in polishing their abilities and innovating themselves as a more disciplined person. So it is also very important to possess knowledge about how modern day technologies came into existence. who found them and how did these persons managed to develop such amazing phenomenas.

Wrapping up the whole debate we can say both these subjects holds their own distinct importance in school life as both of these aims to nourish a student in different ways. If i have to choose one side I'll definitely choose science as my priority because it affects our daily life to a greater deal and overall professional opportunities are increasingly more in contrast to history. For example, students who chose science in my country have higher rate of employment while comparing them with those who chose History and Arts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both perspectives and make your own preference clear: you recognise History’s value, then state that you would choose Science because of its effect on daily life and employment. The examples of historical figures as role models and science-related industries are relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for Science is mainly asserted through broad claims about survival and jobs, while the History paragraph focuses on personal qualities and gives little explanation of its wider importance. The final employment comparison is also general rather than supported with a specific example. To strengthen the response, explain each subject’s contribution more fully and use a concrete example to support your preference.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each subject, and a conclusion that states your preference. This makes the discussion easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “On the contrary side” and “Wrapping up the whole debate” signal the stages of your argument, although some transitions sound formulaic or do not express the relationship precisely. Within paragraphs, ideas sometimes move quickly—for example, the Science paragraph shifts from daily life to school choices and then a list of industries without explaining the links. The History paragraph’s final questions also interrupt the flow. Use more natural transitions and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “academic subject,” “job opportunities,” “role model,” and “professional opportunities,” so the main ideas are communicated. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, but several choices are unnatural or imprecise, such as “stand by their opinion,” “very major subject,” and “nourish a student.” Repetition of “important” and “significant” limits variety, while errors such as “phenomenas” and “past era’s” affect accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and precise wording rather than adding formal-sounding phrases. For instance, describe History as helping students “understand the past” and Science as offering “career prospects in technical fields.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure (“If I have to choose one side…”) and clauses introduced by “because” and “while.” Meaning is generally clear, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and punctuation remain. For example, “science and technology is” should take a plural verb, and “All the important things … includes” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “how did these persons managed,” the question structure and verb form are incorrect; indirect questions require “how these people managed.” Capitalisation and sentence boundaries also need attention, particularly the lowercase “who” after a full stop and the questions embedded in the History paragraph. Proofread these patterns while retaining your sentence variety.
