Student answer (Band 7.0)
In recent times, many people are of the opinion that history should be considered as one of the paramount subjects in schools. However, some people believe that different subjects like science and technology should be given more focus than history. In my opinion, although history holds cultural identity and information regarding a person's homeland, modern day subjects must be taught in educational institutions to acquire the knowledge of the advancements in the world.
On the one hand, history has remained one of the pivotal focuses for many learners in the world, as it provides the information regarding culture and societal changes over many generations. With history, the students come to know about the people's lives, their fashion sense, and the appearance of their household. Moreover, many youngsters learn about the knowledge of their mother country, national records, and influential figures that rose to prominence in their lives through history. It instills them with confidence and courage to work hard like those people to achieve remarkable things in life. For example, Muslims study the historical lifestyle of their last prophet and try to follow his footsteps.
On the other hand, with the technological advancements in the field of science and technology, many people are curious to learn about the benefits of these tools. Universities are modifying and redesigning their curriculum to teach more technology-related subjects. Almost every one has a smartphone and laptop nowadays, and people study those courses just to stay connected with the world. They can access almost any sort of information on their smartphone. For example, people study newspapers on their smartphones, as it's accessible to read. Hence, technological subjects should be considered more crucial in today's digital world.
In conclusion, although history proved to be advantageous for students to know about their culture and homeland, I believe staying connected and excelling in the fields of sciences and technology should be given more priority than history.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You discuss both perspectives and state a consistent view: history has cultural value, but science and technology deserve greater priority today. The two body paragraphs give relevant reasons, including learning about national figures and using digital tools to access information. The examples help illustrate your points, particularly the reference to studying a prophet’s life. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that historical figures inspire students to achieve remarkable things could be linked more clearly to how this benefits education, while the smartphone example shows technology’s usefulness more than why it should be prioritised as a school subject. Developing these links and comparing the subjects more directly would make the response more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear, effective structure: an introduction presents the debate and your position, each body paragraph develops one side, and the conclusion restates your preference. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” guide the reader through the argument. Within paragraphs, ideas generally move from a main claim to explanation and example. Some linking is a little mechanical, and a few connections could be made more explicit. For example, the move from people using smartphones to studying technology-related courses is not fully explained. Use transitions selectively and clarify how each example supports the paragraph’s central claim to make cohesion more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You show an adequate range and make purposeful attempts at more formal vocabulary, including “paramount,” “pivotal,” “societal changes,” and “technological advancements.” These choices suit an academic discussion, and your meaning remains clear. However, some less common expressions are not used naturally or precisely: “pivotal focuses” is an awkward collocation, “the knowledge of their mother country” is unclear, and “the appearance of their household” does not express the intended idea clearly. There is also repetition of “history” and “technology” where more precise alternatives could help. Aim for natural collocations and exact meaning rather than choosing elevated words simply for formality; for example, describe historical customs or living conditions directly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a range of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “although,” “as,” and “while,” and many sentences are controlled and easy to understand. The opening sentence and the contrast in the conclusion demonstrate effective subordination. Some grammatical slips remain, but they do not usually interfere with meaning. For example, “Almost every one has” should be “Almost everyone has,” and “the people's lives, their fashion sense, and the appearance of their household” has an unclear shift in number and reference. In “history proved to be advantageous,” the past tense is less suitable for a general conclusion than “history has proved” or “history is advantageous.” Review agreement, reference, and tense consistency while retaining your varied sentence structures.
