IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the schools, all the subjects have same importance. However, different people have different opinions. If we talk about History subject, people usually consider this subject very boring or dry. On the other hand, people think, subjects like Science and technology are more intresting. If we think about the importance of both courses then, in my point of view both are important.

Let's discuss why? The school students must be aware of the all the activities happened in the past. For example, a student is a big fan of the other courses like Science and technology, he/she must think about the facts like how it started? who was the inventor of telephone? who was the inventor of bulb? how the scientists got the idea of gravity? So, these are all the questions somehow connected with the history.

In today's world, obviously we can't ignore the subjects like Science and technology. We are in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The markets are full of new gadgets in every new day. Recently, Elon Musk launched the flying car and that wondered the whole world. So, in this era where we can see new tech stuff everywhere, students should know all these things from the start, I mean from the school level. They can learn about everything by those courses not the other general courses like History, Urdu, Hindi or any other language courses.

In the conclusion, each subject has it's own purpose for the students and we can't consider anything optional specially at the school level.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall view that both subjects matter, and you include relevant points about how historical knowledge helps explain scientific discoveries and why technology is prominent today. However, the discussion is uneven: the History paragraph offers questions about inventions rather than explaining how studying the past benefits students, while the Science and technology paragraph focuses mainly on new gadgets. The claim that students can learn “everything” through these subjects is broad and is not supported. The response also does not fully develop the contrast between the two views in the prompt. To strengthen the response, explain each side’s educational value with a specific example, then state more precisely how you weigh their importance in your conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate discussion of History and technology, and a conclusion. Phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In today’s world” help signal shifts between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes loose: the History section moves from students’ awareness of the past to a series of questions, without explaining the connection in a developed way. The technology paragraph then shifts from AI to markets and a flying car, making the central point less focused. Some linking is mechanical, including “Let’s discuss why?” and repeated use of “So.” Build each paragraph around one main claim, support it, and use clearer links between the example and the claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “Artificial Intelligence,” “inventor,” “gravity,” and “gadgets,” so the reader can follow the subject matter. However, the range is limited and several choices are informal, imprecise, or awkward for an academic essay: “tech stuff,” “dry,” “new in every new day,” and “wondered the whole world.” There are also spelling and form errors, such as “intresting,” and repeated reliance on general words such as “things” and “important.” These choices sometimes make the meaning less precise. Aim for more formal collocations and vocabulary that expresses educational benefits, such as “technological developments,” “historical context,” and “scientific progress,” while checking spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer structures, including conditional and explanatory sentences, and the main message is generally understandable. However, the range is limited, and complex attempts often contain errors. Examples include “all the subjects have same importance” (missing article), “activities happened in the past” (the verb form does not fit the sentence), and “a student … he/she must think” (awkward agreement and sentence construction). The question sequence beginning “how it started?” also uses question word order inside a statement. There are further problems with apostrophes and punctuation in “it's own purpose” and with sentence boundaries. Practise accurate article use, verb forms, embedded questions, and sentence punctuation, then reread each sentence to check that its parts fit together.
