Student answer (Band 6.5)
There is an ongoing debate regarding whether History is one of the most important school subject or whether Science and Technology is more important in today's world. While learning about the past is important, I believe that at this modern day and age, students must be more adept in Science and Technology.
On one hand, studying History is important because students will learn how the world progressed over various eras. Through these lessons, students will become aware of the struggles that people in the past have to go through. For example, the hardships and atrocity that people experienced during the time of Hitler. This memories of the past will make them more appreciative history, people and culture which provides inspiration to further improve the world they currently live in.
On the other hand, with the advances in technology and development in modern society, students must be trained well in the field of science and technology. Nowadays, the world is driven by the improvement of different sectors of the society using science and technology. The machines that were developed in transportation and medicine have advanced people's knowledge beyond what is seen by the naked eye. The submarines sent to the deepest parts of the ocean and the CT scans showed human anatomy beyond what the eyes can see. Both contributes to the improvement of life not only of humans but also that of other living things.
In conlcusion, while history is important for the lessons of the past and its appreciation, I personally believe that students these days should learn more about Science and Technology to further improve our life and the world we now live in.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address both views and state a clear position: History has value, but Science and Technology should receive greater emphasis today. The two body paragraphs give relevant support, including learning from past atrocities and examples such as submarines and CT scans. This meets the task well, with ideas extended and supported. To strengthen the response further, develop the comparison more explicitly: explain why the practical benefits of scientific study should outweigh, or complement, the civic and cultural lessons of History. Some claims, such as technology improving life for all living things, are broad and would be more convincing with a specific explanation or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction presents your view, the body paragraphs discuss each subject, and the conclusion restates your position. Signposting such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the structure easy to follow. Examples are generally placed alongside the ideas they support. To make the organisation more polished, connect some points within paragraphs more explicitly. For instance, the move from historical hardship to appreciation of “history, people and culture” could be explained more smoothly, and the final science examples could be linked directly to the claim about improving society. This would make cohesion less dependent on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “progressed,” “hardships,” “advances,” “transportation,” and “human anatomy.” These choices help communicate both the historical and scientific arguments. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or awkward, such as “at this modern day and age,” “the improvement of different sectors,” and “appreciative history.” There is also a spelling error in “conlcusion.” Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for the effects of scientific developments and the lessons of history would help you express your ideas with greater flexibility and accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because students will learn how the world progressed” and “while history is important.” Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, articles, and verb forms: “one of the most important school subject,” “This memories,” and “Both contributes” should be corrected. The past-tense phrase “people in the past have to go through” also needs more consistent tense control. Review singular and plural agreement and check each sentence for article use. Greater accuracy in these areas, alongside your existing sentence variety, would make the writing more controlled.
