Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals believe that history is a significant school subject because it teaches about past events and cultural identity, while others argue that subjects like science and technology are more important in the world today. In my opinion, science and technology are more beneficial because it offers creativity and innovation in societies.
To begin with, teaching history in classrooms is important. This is because it gives students insights of past events and traditional cultures. Some students who tend to lack knowledge of their origin may be taught history in school, and not only will this give them knowledge about their roots, but it will also help them understand some past events. For instance, if students are taught about their customs and traditions, it will help them identify their cultures and would pass it down to their generations. As a result, the cycle of knowledge continues which means that they are able to understand the lifestyles of their ancestors.
However, I believe that science and technology as a subject are more advantageous. The reason is that students may study their dream courses such as medicine and engineering. Furthermore, as the world is evolving today, the study of science creates opportunity for scientific innovations. For instance, the use of mobile phones and electronic appliances at work have made communication and task easy. This is as a result of science and technology which are taught at school. Consequently, this improves the efficiency of work done at the workplace and relationship between individuals.
In conclusion, although some people think that history as a subject is more beneficial because it teaches about past events, others believe that science and technology is more significant, I believe that the latter is essential because it offers opportunity for creativity and innovation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response discusses both perspectives and gives a clear opinion in the introduction and conclusion: you explain the value of history for understanding cultural roots, then argue that science and technology are more beneficial today. The examples about passing traditions to future generations and using phones and appliances at work are relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the history paragraph mainly repeats the benefits of cultural knowledge, while the science paragraph would benefit from explaining more specifically how studying these subjects prepares students for modern needs. The claim that science “offers creativity and innovation” also needs fuller explanation or a concrete example. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation of its significance to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from history to science and technology is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical and the connections between claims could be more explicit. For example, “As a result, the cycle of knowledge continues” follows the point about passing down traditions, but the link to understanding ancestors’ lifestyles could be explained more smoothly. In the science paragraph, connect the example of workplace devices more directly to the value of learning science at school. More varied referencing and transitions would make cohesion more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “cultural identity,” “traditional cultures,” “scientific innovations,” and “efficiency.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear. Some word combinations are imprecise or unnatural, however, such as “insights of past events,” “study of science creates opportunity,” and “made communication and task easy.” There is also repetition of broad terms such as “important,” “beneficial,” and “knowledge,” which limits precision. Aim to use more natural collocations and choose specific terms that express the intended relationship, such as how scientific study supports technological development or workplace productivity. This would add flexibility without making the writing sound forced.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both straightforward sentences and more complex structures. For example, “not only will this give them knowledge about their roots, but it will also help them understand some past events” shows an attempt to use a balanced construction, and the ideas are generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement and number. In “science and technology are more beneficial because it offers,” the pronoun should agree with the plural subject; similarly, “science and technology is more significant” needs a consistent singular or plural construction. The sentence about phones and appliances also has a plural subject followed by “have made … task easy,” where the noun and adjective forms need attention. Check agreement and sentence patterns carefully while retaining your range of complex forms.
