Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that History is one of the most essential subjects in academic studies while others oppose that nowadays Science and technology related subjects are more effective than history. Although both views have valid arguments, I firmly believe that Science and technology contribute more in our academics as well as in our day-to-day life as they have made our life comfortable along with the opportunities to develop our knowledge and skills.
One of the advantages of Science and technology is critical thinking. People now engage with the objective, disciplined process of questioning, analyzing, evaluating and interpreting information to make resoned judgements and reliable decisions. For instance, scientists analyze, take ideas from past papers, discuss with others for having a firm and perfect result regarding an unknown fact or incomplete invention. Moreover, another benefit is comfortness and affortable lifestyle. Science and technology have made our so easy and affortable by inventing new equipments giving that feeling of the people of global as we can now communicate to anyone residing any part of the world.
However, History is also a part of life relecting the culture and past history of our country. History is like a mirror which recites stories of our brave and hard working anchestors who faught for the independence of their kingdom. Learning history can be monotonous but it is the only memory of our bravery and past events reflecting our roots .
In a nutshell, although Science and technology is essential for our comfort and critical thinking, history is also needed to know our roots.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both sides of the question and state a clear preference for science and technology in the introduction and conclusion. The points about critical thinking, convenience, and learning about cultural roots are relevant. However, the two views are not developed equally: the science paragraph gives examples, but the History paragraph mainly says it preserves memories and roots, without explaining in detail how studying the past benefits students or society today. The example about scientists using past papers is also not clearly connected to why these subjects should be prioritised in school. To strengthen the response, explain each main reason more fully and use a specific, relevant example to support your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting science and technology, a contrasting paragraph on History, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Although,” “Moreover,” and “However” help signal the direction of the argument. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, though. For example, “Moreover, another benefit is…” repeats the additive link, and the move from critical thinking to comfort is abrupt. The conclusion restates the two subjects but does not fully draw together the reasons given. Improve progression by organising each body paragraph around one clear claim, then explaining and illustrating it before moving to the next point. Clearer links between examples and claims would also help.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “critical thinking,” “evaluating,” “interpreting information,” and “culture,” and you attempt less common expressions such as “objective, disciplined process.” This gives you enough range to discuss the topic, but inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make ideas harder to follow. Examples include “comfortness,” “affortable,” “equipments,” and “recites stories”; more natural choices would be “comfort,” “affordable,” “equipment,” and “tells the stories of.” “Past history” is also repetitive. Aim for accurate, natural combinations of words rather than more elaborate phrasing, and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although both views have valid arguments” and a relative clause in “who fought for the independence…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but there are some errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “our life comfortable” needs a grammatical link such as “our lives more comfortable,” while “Science and technology is essential” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence beginning “Science and technology have made our so easy” is also missing a noun after “our.” Commas are missing after transitions, and spacing around punctuation is inconsistent. Practise checking each sentence for a complete subject and verb, correct agreement, and necessary articles.
