IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is an ongoing debate about what is more important, history or science and technology. Both subjects are important in their own way, but one is having weitage over the other. This essay will discuss the importance of both subjects and what is needed in comtemporary time.
History is the study of events happened in the past. It is necessary to have knowlege about the past events so that one can understand the mistakes and avoid them. Historical events like wars can give us knowledge about the successes and failures of countries. The ideas like nationalism and fascism can be best avoided as they were unfavourable in past.
As far as science and technology are concerned, they are very important in contemporary time. A person with knowledge of history cannot earn money in this advanced world where science and technology play a vital role in globalization of the world. Science and technology has made this world advanced.
both the history and science are important in their own way. History tells us about our culture and origin. But in my opinion, science and technology in this contemporary time is more important. World is progressing day by day.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both sides of the discussion and state a preference for science and technology, while also recognising history’s value in understanding past mistakes and cultural origins. However, the response only partially develops the task: the benefits of science and technology are asserted rather than explained, and the claim that historical knowledge cannot help someone earn money is too broad and unsupported. Your position is clearest in the final paragraph, but it would be stronger if stated directly and maintained throughout. The response is also below the required 250 words, which limits the space available to explain both views and provide a relevant example. Develop each main point with a specific explanation or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on history and science and technology, and a concluding opinion. This helps the reader follow the main topic. However, progression is limited because the ideas within paragraphs are brief and not consistently linked; for example, the move from wars to nationalism and fascism is not explained. The phrase “As far as science and technology are concerned” signals a new view, but the final paragraph repeats that both subjects matter without adding a clear synthesis. Use linking expressions to show cause and contrast, and build each paragraph around one main point followed by explanation and an example. This would make the organisation more coherent and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “historical events,” “nationalism,” “fascism,” “globalization,” and “contemporary,” which allows you to discuss both subject areas. There is some attempt at more formal phrasing, but several spelling errors and inaccurate word choices reduce precision: “weitage,” “knowlege,” and “comtemporary” are noticeable, while “one is having weitage over the other” is unclear. “Advanced” is also repeated and does not specify what science and technology have changed. Aim for accurate collocations such as “give greater priority to” and more precise descriptions of technological effects. A wider range of carefully chosen terms would help express your ideas more clearly and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You communicate the main ideas using simple sentences and some longer structures, such as “It is necessary to have knowlege about the past events so that one can understand the mistakes and avoid them.” However, the range of sentence patterns is limited, and errors in agreement and sentence construction occur. For example, “Science and technology has made” should use a plural verb, and “History is the study of events happened in the past” needs a relative clause, such as “events that happened in the past.” The sentence beginning “A person with knowledge of history cannot earn money” is grammatically understandable but awkwardly constructed. Check subject–verb agreement and practise combining ideas with accurate relative and subordinate clauses.
