Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The disagreement regarding the importance of History versus Science and technology is an age old debate. My opinion is both has its spark in their own field and contribuited equally in humanity.
History is basically the story of the universe and humankind. History let us know about our past and the pattern of the nature by presenting tales from thousands and millions years ago. We look at our history and can see what went wrong in an execution or a theory and know what not to repeat in the future; this is the way of advancement. The perks of humanity is that they can learn and pass that knowledge onto the next generation which eliminates the backlog of starting over. If we didn't know how wars and seiges of countries have destroyed countless civilizations throughout the history, we wouldn't have pursued peace over the desire of power.
On the other hand, Science and technology is the backbone of moden society, delevering all the discoveires and scope it has offered to humanity till now. Science is the language of nature and technology is the medium to use that language for human purpose. Learning Science helps build the reasoning in young minds and technology increases the ability of critical thinking. It makes us question an event then motivates us to get the answers. Without science, no knowledge could be used in our favour. But that knowledge somehow comes from the history. For example, Rutherford proposed a nuclear model which showed the fundamental structure of atoms but was flawed. Then Neils Bohr picked up from there to develop a better model and with this formuila of trial and error we gradually entered an era of quantum physics which is without debate result of looking at the history.
To conclude, both History and Science and technology is important as school subjects because they are complementary to each other. One provides us with knowledge and insight and another drives us towards application and innovation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both perspectives and state a consistent position: History and Science and technology are complementary and equally important. The discussion is relevant, with the example of Rutherford and Bohr illustrating how scientific knowledge develops from earlier work, while the reference to wars supports the value of learning from the past. This meets the task well, and the examples show some development. However, the case for why these subjects matter specifically in school is not explored in much detail, and the History argument relies on broad claims such as learning from past conflicts. To strengthen the response further, explain more fully how each subject benefits students and support the general points with a more specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Transitions such as “On the other hand,” “For example,” and “To conclude” help readers follow the discussion, and the scientific example is placed logically within its paragraph. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. The shift from “Without science, no knowledge could be used in our favour” to “But that knowledge somehow comes from the history” is abrupt and the reference to “that knowledge” is not fully clear. The History paragraph also moves quickly from learning about the past to avoiding war. Clarifying these connections would make progression more consistently controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “backbone,” “fundamental structure,” “critical thinking,” and “innovation,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also several noticeable spelling and word-choice problems that reduce precision, such as “contribuited,” “moden,” “delevering,” “discoveires,” and “formuila.” Some expressions are awkward or imprecise, including “has its spark in their own field,” “the pattern of the nature,” and “the perks of humanity.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall argument, but they make parts of it less natural. Aim for accurate spelling and conventional collocations, and choose words that express your intended meaning directly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If we didn't know …, we wouldn't have pursued peace” and a relative clause in “a nuclear model which showed…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “both has its spark” and “Science and technology is” have subject–verb agreement problems; “History let us know” also needs a consistent verb form. Articles and plurals are sometimes missing or inaccurate, as in “throughout the history” and “thousands and millions years ago.” The long sentence beginning “Then Neils Bohr picked up…” would benefit from clearer punctuation and sentence boundaries. Check agreement, articles, and plural forms when editing.
