IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The two given plans display the information about a university's sports centre, how it currently looks, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Overall, it can be seen that the sports center is going to be converted to provide more facilities for the athletes. It is seen that the outdoor courts of both sides will be taken under one roof. The facilities such as a cafe and shops have been included to provide refreshments for the players.

However, in the current plan, the outdoor courts are used for general purposes, but in the redevelopment plan, they will be used for specific purposes. The left court will be converted to the leisure pool so that players can practice and have some relaxing time. The right court will be used for the sports hall, where ceremonial events can happen.

The gym will be double the size of the current plan to provide more free space for trainers. The two dance studios will be included so the dancers can practice till late nights. The changing room will be included on both sides of the entrance so the athletes can change their clothes. On the one end, a cafe has been included so that players can have some energy drinks, and on the other hand, sports shops have been added so that the equipment can be bought as and when required.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the sports centre redevelopment, including the expansion of the gym, the addition of new facilities like the cafe and shops, and the conversion of outdoor courts into indoor spaces. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the plans. To reach a higher band, ensure you make more direct comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states rather than describing them in isolation. For instance, explicitly contrasting the size of the gym or the specific change in the function of the court areas would strengthen your analysis. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Your response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In the current plan', and 'On the one end' to guide the reader through the text. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the connection between the current layout and the future layout is more fluidly integrated within the same paragraph where appropriate. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'converted', and 'ceremonial events' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'taken under one roof' (better phrased as 'enclosed') and 'till late nights' (which is slightly unnatural). While you use some less common vocabulary, there is room to incorporate more precise academic collocations to describe spatial changes. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the response, and there are no significant errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The left court will be converted to the leisure pool so that players can practice'. Your control of grammar is generally good, and most sentences are error-free. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'The two dance studios will be included' (which sounds slightly passive/awkward; 'two dance studios will be added' is more natural) and 'on the other hand' (which is usually used to contrast two opposing ideas, not just to list another feature). Overall, your grammatical accuracy is strong, and your errors do not interfere with the clarity of your report.
