Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps below show the layout of a university sport center present and after rebuilt.

Overall, we can see that so many palaces will be built new and some will get demolished like both of the outdoor courts get demolished and instead of that make new areas were to be contracted like sports hall dance studios pool etc.

In detail view, we can see that currently there were three mains part central developed and two outdoor courts but in future plan everything gets under one boundary. On the east outdoor courts will be removed while new areas like sports hall two new dance studio created. In the corner of east-south side new changing room and a brand-new cafe have to build. On the other side, which is west part, new leisure pool suppose build and on west-south side it predicted to create changing room and beside those sports shop planned to be created and the gym area will be also extended which we can see in future plan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the task by describing the main features of the sports centre redevelopment. You have identified the key changes, such as the removal of outdoor courts and the addition of new facilities like the pool and sports hall. However, the description is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, professional overview of the spatial changes. While you mention the main additions, the comparison between the 'now' and 'future' layouts could be more precise. To improve, focus on grouping features logically (e.g., indoor vs. outdoor, or east vs. west) to provide a clearer summary of the transformation rather than listing individual items in a disjointed manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow between sentences is often mechanical and lacks sophisticated cohesive devices. Phrases like 'In detail view' and 'On the other side' are used, but the logical progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to track exactly where certain new facilities are located in relation to the original layout. Using a wider range of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would significantly improve the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying on basic verbs like 'build', 'create', and 'make'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'after rebuilt' (should be 'after the redevelopment') and 'contracted' (likely meant 'constructed'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning of the task, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You should aim to use more specific terminology related to maps and urban planning, such as 'demolished', 'expanded', 'relocated', or 'integrated', to demonstrate a more flexible range of language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly regarding verb tenses and passive voice construction. For example, 'new leisure pool suppose build' should be 'a new leisure pool is supposed to be built'. Additionally, there are issues with articles ('the west part') and sentence fragments. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction limits the score. To improve, focus on mastering the passive voice for describing changes and ensure consistent use of articles and prepositions when describing locations on a map.
