Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the sports centre redevelopment, including the expansion of the gym and the addition of new facilities like the leisure pool and dance studios. However, the description is occasionally unclear, such as the reference to the outdoor courts being 'broken down' and the confusing phrasing regarding the 'west side instillment'. While the main trends are identified, the lack of precision in describing the spatial changes makes it difficult for the reader to fully visualise the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that the location of new features is described with greater clarity and that the comparison between the 'now' and 'future' states is more structured.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or awkward, such as 'Continuously' to start a new paragraph or 'It will also fascinate that'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to track which part of the map is being discussed. While there is an overall logical arrangement, the flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed, which impacts the clarity of the comparison. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes in the sports centre. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'reconstructed' and 'drastically', but there are also instances of awkward word choices, such as 'instillment' and 'experienced in new layout', which do not fit the context of describing a floor plan. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lack of precise terminology for architectural features limits the score. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations related to describing maps and spatial changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('at west side', 'at east and south corner'), subject-verb agreement, and awkward phrasing ('the maps illustrate the there are'). Some sentences are difficult to parse due to these errors, such as 'the middle part of university's sports centre equipped by 25m pool'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on basic sentence construction and preposition usage would be beneficial.
