Student answer (Band 6.0)

The building structure of the university centre now is slightly similar to the future plans of how its going to be restructured though a noticeable amount of space being used is going to be added when its restructured.

In the present layout there are two available outdoor courts but according to the future plans it seems they are going to be ommitted. The space of the gym is going to be slightly increased after the redevelopment. The reception, seating space and changing room is not subjected to change.

A significant change is going to be done to the pool, its going to be shifted from the center of the building and placed at the right of the building.A few sections are going to be added such as the dance studio, sports shop, cafe and the sports hall.

The University sports centre is going to be more occupied with a lot of activities after it been reconstructed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have identified the main features of the sports centre redevelopment, such as the removal of outdoor courts and the addition of new facilities like the dance studio and cafe. However, the response lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes, which is essential for Task 1. While you mention that the centre will be 'more occupied', this is a vague observation rather than a summary of the spatial transformation. To improve, ensure you provide a clear, concise overview in the introduction that highlights the primary trend (e.g., the expansion of indoor facilities at the expense of outdoor space). Some details, such as the specific location of the pool, are described, but the overall comparison could be more analytical.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. For instance, you rely heavily on simple sentence structures and lack transition words to link ideas between sentences effectively. The progression of information is somewhat disjointed; for example, jumping from the pool to the new facilities without a clear logical connector. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') to create a smoother flow between your observations.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is somewhat repetitive and lacks precision. Phrases like 'is going to be' are used repeatedly, which makes the writing feel a bit simplistic. You have attempted to use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'redevelopment', 'restructured', and 'layout', which is good. However, to improve, you should aim for more varied and sophisticated collocations. For example, instead of saying 'a significant change is going to be done', you could use 'a major transformation will take place'. Additionally, ensure you check for spelling errors like 'ommitted' (omitted).

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response consists mostly of simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'reception, seating space and changing room'). There are also grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'its going to be' (it's) and 'after it been reconstructed' (after it has been reconstructed). To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or relative clauses, and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and punctuation. The current level of error is noticeable and occasionally affects the clarity of your sentences.
