IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plans illustrate the layout of a sports centre of a university, and the prediction of the look after redevelopment.
Overall, in the future, the sports centre will be a whole big place instead of separate pools. The 25m pool, reception, changing room and seating are expected to remain unchanged. In addition, the new improvements will be made, according to the plan.
As for now, the main hall contains reception in the front, 25m pool in the back, changing room and seating are placed in the west and east of the pool, and the gym is at the very end. In the east and wesr of the main hall, we have two outdoor courts.
In the future plan, a big main hall is drawn. Café and sports shops will be beside the reception, and on the sides of them, we will have two changing rooms. In the east side of the seating, there will be a brand-new sports hall, and two dance studios. Beside the original changing room, a new leisure pool will be placed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the sports centre plans, including the current layout and the proposed redevelopment. You provided a clear overview and highlighted key changes, such as the addition of the leisure pool, sports hall, and dance studios. However, the response could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For instance, you mention that the 25m pool remains unchanged, but you could have more explicitly contrasted the removal of the outdoor courts with the addition of the new indoor facilities. Additionally, some descriptions of location are slightly vague, which makes it harder for the reader to visualise the exact transformation. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the current and future layouts. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition', 'As for now', and 'In the future plan', to guide the reader through the information. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that the relationship between the current and future states is connected more fluidly throughout the text rather than just in the overview.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the layout, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'reception', and 'leisure pool'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'a whole big place' and 'in the east and wesr'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the variety and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language related to spatial arrangements and architectural changes, and ensure you check for simple spelling errors, as these can detract from the professional tone of your report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the sports centre of a university' (should be 'a university sports centre') and 'the new improvements will be made' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). There are also minor punctuation and preposition errors, such as 'in the east and wesr of the main hall'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more varied sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
