IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagrams below illustrate the present and future arrangements of a university's sports arena.

Right now, centre is divided mainly into two, indoor and outdoor areas, but in the future plans, the place is designed into one big arena.

The present layout of the sports centre consists of two outdoor courts in the left and right of the centre and in the middle of it is located the enclosed indoor specific court. With the entrance, there is a reception in the front, which goes to changing room on the left and seating area on the right of it. After crossing this area, there is a gym at the back of the centre. In the very middle of it, is a 25 meters long pool in a rectangular shape.

For the redevelopment plans, the outdoor courts are merged within the main central area to add more sections within. On the left of the central region, is given to leisure pool with a changing room and sports shop alongside. And on the right side, outdoor court is altered into a sports hall, two dance studios, a changing room and also a cafe. Rest the gym is elongated in its length horizontally and the rest remains the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of both the current and future layouts. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the expansion of the gym and the conversion of outdoor courts into indoor facilities. However, the overview is somewhat weak; while you mention the transition from two areas to one, it lacks a clear summary of the most significant structural transformations. Additionally, some descriptions are slightly imprecise, such as stating the outdoor courts are 'merged within the main central area' when they are actually being replaced by new indoor facilities. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview highlights the most striking changes more clearly and maintain greater precision when describing spatial relationships.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear progression from the current layout to the future redevelopment. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two timeframes. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Rest the gym is elongated' or 'After crossing this area'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly. The transition between the description of the entrance and the gym is a bit abrupt, which slightly affects the overall cohesion of the first body paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'elongated', and 'enclosed'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher score. For example, 'the place is designed into one big arena' is slightly unnatural, and 'is given to leisure pool' is grammatically awkward. You also rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'on the left' and 'on the right'. To improve, focus on using more precise verbs and nouns to describe architectural changes, such as 'transformed', 'converted', or 'reconfigured', and ensure your prepositions are used correctly in spatial descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'centre is divided mainly into two' (missing article), 'in the left and right of the centre' (should be 'on the left and right'), and 'Rest the gym is elongated' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with comma usage and sentence boundaries. To improve, focus on article usage and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures while ensuring they remain error-free.
