IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 8.5)

The diagrams compare the current layout of a university sports centre with a proposed redevelopment plan.

Overall, the sports centre is expected to become considerably larger and offer a wider range of facilities. The central swimming pool, gym, seating area and reception will remain, while both outdoor courts will be replaced by new indoor and leisure amenities.

At present, the sports centre consists mainly of a 25-metre swimming pool in the middle, with seating on the eastern side and a changing room on the western side. A gym is located along the northern side, and reception is positioned at the southern entrance. Outdoor courts occupy both the west and east sides of the building.

Under the redevelopment plan, the outdoor courts will disappear completely. On the western side, a large leisure pool will be constructed, together with a new changing room and a sports shop near the entrance. On the eastern side, a sports hall will be added beside the seating area, and two dance studios will be built at the far eastern end. A café and an additional changing room will also be provided near the southern entrance.

In summary, the future sports centre will shift from a relatively simple complex centred on a pool and gym to a much more comprehensive recreational facility with expanded indoor sports and leisure services.
