IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The two plane illustrate current layout of university sports centre and future layout after redevelopment.
Overall, the sport centre significantly expanded with more facilities. The reception, changing room, 25 m swimming pool, and seating area will remain same. Outdoor court will join to the main building with different indoor facilities.
At present, the sports centre consists of a gym located above the reception, with a 25-metre swimming pool in the middle. On one side of pool is changing room and opposite side is seating area. In addition, there are two outdoor courts situated to the east and west of the main building.
After redevelopment, the centre will become much more larger. The outdoor courts on the western side will be replaced by leisure pool, together with changing room and sports shop. On the eastern side, the existing outdoor courts will be transformed into sports hall, two dance studios and another changing room and beside a changing room cafe will situated. Although the gym, reception and 25-metre pool will remain in their current positions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the sports centre's current and future layout. You provided a clear overview and highlighted the key changes, such as the transformation of outdoor courts into indoor facilities. However, the response could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For instance, you mention the centre will become 'much more larger' (a grammatical error) but do not specify the nature of the expansion beyond listing the new rooms. To reach a higher band, ensure you clearly contrast the 'before' and 'after' states with more specific detail regarding the spatial changes, rather than just listing the new additions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the current state to the future development. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition' and 'After redevelopment' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing (e.g., 'the existing outdoor courts') is consistently clear to help the reader follow the spatial changes more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the layout, such as 'redevelopment', 'transformed', and 'situated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'much more larger' (which is redundant) and 'will remain same' (missing the article 'the'). You also have some minor phrasing issues, such as 'will join to the main building'. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding redundant intensifiers. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive terms for spatial arrangement would also be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several recurring grammatical errors. For example, you missed articles in 'The two plane illustrate current layout' and 'opposite side is seating area'. Additionally, there are issues with verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement, such as 'cafe will situated' instead of 'will be situated'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic articles, prepositions, and passive voice constructions.
