IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two plans compare the layout of a university sports center now and how it will look after the redevelopment.

Overall, it can be seen that the sport center will become modernized and expand. It will provide several facilities to players in terms of refreshments, changing rooms, and so on. In contrast, it will convert the outdoor courts into a specialized activity area.

However, the outdoor court, which is located on the west side, will be converted to a leisure pool where players can practice swimming. On the left side of the entrance there will be a sports shop where individuals can purchase the equipment as per the requirements, which is empty space at present. Whereas, on the right side of the entrance there will be a cafe so that athletes can have some refreshments and stay connected with their sports.

The changing rooms will be added on both sides of the corner of the entrance, giving players extra facilities to change clothes. Outdoor courts located on the east side will be converted into a sports hall where some events will be organized. The two dance studios will be included on east side of the center so dancers can practice till late nights. Nevertheless, the gym area will be almost doubled so that more number of players can train at the same time. While, existing changing room, reception, twenty-five-meter pool, and seating area will remain unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response effectively covers the main features of the redevelopment plans. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the addition of the sports shop, cafe, and leisure pool, as well as the expansion of the gym. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise. For instance, you mention the outdoor courts on the east side are converted to a sports hall, but you could more explicitly contrast this with the west side's conversion to a leisure pool to better highlight the spatial changes. Overall, the information is well-selected and relevant to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the specific details. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'However', and 'Whereas' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the use of 'Nevertheless' at the start of the final paragraph is not entirely appropriate in context, as the expansion of the gym is a positive development rather than a contrast to the previous information. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words will help enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'modernized', and 'converted' appropriately. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'more number of players' (should be 'a greater number of players') and 'stay connected with their sports', which sounds slightly unnatural. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to describing maps and changes, such as 'relocated', 'extended', or 'transformed'. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'which is empty space at present' lacks a subject, and 'on both sides of the corner of the entrance' is slightly awkward phrasing. Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and pluralization, such as 'some events will be organized' (which is fine, but 'the gym area' vs 'a gym area' could be more precise). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.
