The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Now we are discussing the university sports centre for redevelopement. So now we explain the view of sports centre after redevelopement. So in the first map there are two outdoor courts but in the future plan there will be only no outdoor court. On the place of east side outdoor sports hall, two dance studios, changing room, and the area of gym will also be increased.

In the west side the future plan is that the outdoor court will be replaced by a leisure and enjoyful pool and in front of swimming pool there will be a small changing room and beside the changing room there will be a small shop of sports equipments. On the east side outdoor front there will be small cafe for snacks in the future plans of university sports centre. In the future plans there will be no courts left and all the area will be covered with the new plans and projects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the removal of outdoor courts and the addition of new facilities like the pool and dance studios. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes, which is essential for Task 1. The description is somewhat repetitive and lacks a professional tone. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the 'now' and 'future' layouts could be more structured to highlight the transformation more effectively. To improve, ensure you include a clear introductory overview that summarizes the overall trend of the redevelopment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into two paragraphs, which is a basic structure. However, the flow of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited and repetitive, with frequent use of 'So' and 'In the future plans'. The progression of information is a bit disjointed, as the transition between the east and west sides of the centre is not clearly signaled. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') to connect sentences and ideas more naturally, and ensure each paragraph has a clear thematic focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'leisure and enjoyful pool' and 'small shop of sports equipments'. The word 'equipments' is an uncountable noun and should be 'equipment'. The range of vocabulary is quite narrow, relying on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology related to architectural changes and spatial descriptions, and ensure you use nouns correctly in terms of countability.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'there will be only no outdoor court' is grammatically incorrect and confusing. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While the meaning is generally clear, these errors occur frequently enough to cause some strain for the reader. To improve, focus on sentence construction, particularly the correct use of 'there is/are' and 'will be', and proofread carefully to eliminate basic errors in subject-verb agreement and pluralization.
