IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two maps below illustrate the visual outline of a university's recreational centre at present and after renovation.
Overall, the service centre is going to undergo a massive redevelopment with modern services added beside the present ones. In addition, all the services in the future is going to be indoors.
The present centre has a massive indoor section in the middle with a 25 m pool attached, with a gym on its north side, a changing room on its west side and rows of seating on its east side. It has a reception section at the entrance. On the west and east sides of the indoor section, there are currently two massive outdoor courts.
But if we look at the plan, the centre is going to be all indoors, with the previous indoor section extended horizontally. The gym is going to be extended with two dance studios attached adjacent to an indoor sports hall right next to the 25m pool. On the right-hand side of the entrance, there is going to be a cafe and a big changing room to cater to the dancers and players. A lesisure pool is also going to be constructed on the west side of the pool with a separate changing room. We will also going to have a sport shop on the left-hand side of the entrance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the sports centre's transformation. You have clearly contrasted the current layout with the proposed changes, noting the shift from outdoor to indoor facilities. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant change: the expansion of the indoor area. However, the description of the new layout could be more precise. For instance, you mention a 'leisure pool' and 'sport shop' without clearly referencing their spatial relationship to the existing 25m pool or the entrance in a way that is easy for the reader to visualize. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key features are described with consistent spatial accuracy.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the current state to the future state. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition' and 'On the west and east sides', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or informal, such as 'But if we look at the plan'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the pool', 'the entrance') is always unambiguous would strengthen the flow of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'adjacent', and 'constructed' appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are slightly repetitive or imprecise, such as using 'massive' twice in the same paragraph. To improve, try to vary your descriptive adjectives and ensure collocations are natural. For example, instead of 'visual outline', 'layout' or 'floor plan' would be more standard in this context. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly without significant errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex forms, there are several grammatical slips that detract from the overall accuracy. For example, 'all the services in the future is going to be' should be 'are going to be', and 'We will also going to have' is grammatically incorrect. These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and avoid redundant auxiliary verbs. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher band range.
