IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps below illustrate the layout of a university's sports center at present and how it will appear after renovation.
Overall, the future plan contains considerable changes to the sports center. The pool and the area around it will remain unchanged, with minor changes. Outdoor courts will be transformed into several rooms, and the studios will be built for dancing. The size of the pool will remain stable, and an extra pool will be placed as a leisure pool.
In the center, there is a 25m pool that will remain unchanged in the future. The gym in the north will extend, and the changing room will not be altered; instead, new changing rooms will be constructed. In addition, the seating area and the reception will not be changed. West outdoor courts will be transformed into a leisure pool, and the east outdoor pools will be modified into a sports hall and two dancing studios at the east end. In the south, changing rooms will be made on both ends, and a cafe adjacent to the right changing room and a sports shop by the side of the west changing room.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the sports centre redevelopment. You have clearly contrasted the 'now' and 'future' states, noting key changes such as the expansion of the gym and the addition of new facilities like the cafe and sports shop. However, the description of the pool area is slightly repetitive and contradictory; you mention the pool remains unchanged, then later state an extra leisure pool is added. A more precise overview would clarify that the original pool remains while a new one is added. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well and provides a clear summary of the spatial changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph detailing the specific changes. The progression of ideas is easy to follow as you move from the center of the facility to the north, west, and south sections. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'instead', and 'In the south' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The flow is generally smooth, though the transition between the overview and the body could be slightly more refined to avoid repeating information about the pool.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'transformed', 'modified', and 'adjacent'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling errors, and your word choices effectively convey the spatial shifts shown in the diagrams. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more varied synonyms for 'changed' or 'remained' to avoid repetition, such as 'undergo renovation', 'remain intact', or 'be converted into'. Overall, the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. You demonstrate good control over passive voice constructions, which is essential for describing processes and layouts (e.g., 'will be transformed', 'will be constructed'). Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is accurate. While the grammatical range is solid, you could further enhance your score by using more complex subordinating clauses or varied sentence beginnings to improve the sophistication of your writing. The current level of accuracy is high, with no errors that impede communication.
