IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The plans that have been given below display the layout of a university's sports centre now, and how it will look after its redevelopment. At present, the sports centre is concise and convenient. It includes a couple of necessary facilities for different sports. A reception is present. Beyond the reception lies a 25m pool with a gym, changing room, and seating area attached to it. On both sides of the pool resides outdoor courts, where sports people may use for playing football, basketball, etc. On the other hand, the sports centre after redevelopment is more focused on water sport and performing arts. The reception area includes a cafe for refreshments and confectioneries, along with a sports shop which provides sport equipement, jersey, etc. Beyond the reception area lies a 25m pool with the same facilities. Instead of 2 outdoor courts, there will be a sports hall. A pair of dance studios will be located on the right side. A liesure pool will be constructed along with a subsequent changing room. This facility is provided for people who simply wish to relax in water. Thus, the redevelopment plans of the university's sports centre ensures that more people come to cool down, train, or entertain themselves however they wish.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the two plans, including the current layout and the proposed redevelopment. You successfully identified the main changes, such as the replacement of outdoor courts with a sports hall and the addition of a leisure pool and dance studios. However, the overview is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure you highlight the most significant trends or shifts in the facility's purpose more clearly in the introduction or summary. The comparison between the two layouts is generally well-handled, though some details, like the specific location of the new facilities, could be described with more precision to enhance the clarity of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, moving from the current state to the future state. Paragraphing is used to separate these two distinct timeframes, which helps the reader follow the progression. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand' and 'Instead of', to signal shifts in the narrative. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother; some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this facility') is always unambiguous. Overall, the information is presented in a clear and easy-to-follow manner.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'refreshments', and 'confectioneries' appropriately. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'equipement' and 'liesure', which slightly detract from the professional tone. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more varied collocations related to architectural changes or facility descriptions, and ensure careful proofreading to eliminate basic spelling mistakes that can be easily avoided.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and the grammar is generally accurate, which ensures that the message is conveyed without difficulty. However, there are occasional errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'On both sides of the pool resides outdoor courts' should be 'reside'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'sports people may use for playing'. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement will help elevate your score in this criterion.
