Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given pair of diagrams compares the layout of University Sports Centre at present along with its future plans.

Overall, several improvements are made and new infrastructure is constructed. While amenities such as seating, reception and so on will remain unchanged, new spaces will also be introduced across the sports centre.

Amenities such as the 25m pool, reception, seating and the changing room on the left side of pool will remain untouched while the gym will be expanded to provide more training space to students. The outdoor courts currently situated at both directions will be completely demolished to introduce various fresh facilities.

Moreover, construction of leisure pool along with new changing room and sports shop will be done at the space which is currently occupied by outdoor court in the west. Also, a brand new sports hall will b made along with two dance courts on its right side. Furthermore, changing room similar to the west side is also made in eastern side of building along with a fresh cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the diagrams, including the areas that remain unchanged and the significant redevelopments. You have successfully identified the expansion of the gym, the demolition of the outdoor courts, and the addition of new facilities like the leisure pool, sports hall, and cafe. The overview provides a clear summary of the changes. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more precise; for example, you could explicitly contrast the current layout with the future one by using more comparative language to highlight the shift from outdoor to indoor focus. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location and type of change. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring each paragraph has a distinct thematic focus. For instance, the second body paragraph mixes several different additions; grouping these more tightly would enhance the flow. Referencing is generally clear, and the progression of information from existing features to new developments is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'infrastructure', 'demolished', and 'occupied'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'at both directions' (should be 'on both sides') and 'at the space' (should be 'in the space'). While these errors do not impede communication, refining your use of prepositions and collocations would help you achieve a higher score. The vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the context of a formal report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'will b made' (spelling error) and 'changing room... is also made' (tense inconsistency; should be 'will also be built'). Additionally, some sentences lack articles or have minor prepositional errors, such as 'in eastern side' instead of 'on the eastern side'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede understanding. To improve, focus on proofreading for small slips and ensuring consistent use of future tense when describing the planned changes.
