IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given image shows two layouts, first the current layout of a university's sports centre and a second layout below it, which represents the proposed redevelopment plan for the same.

Overall, the major redevelopment will be the replacement of the western and eastern outdoor courts to make way for a new leisure pool and a sports hall along with two dance studios, additionally a changing room will also be constructed in the southern area of both the sides.

Starting from the entrance, in comparision to the current layout, the reception area will be expanded along both the directions to construct a new sports shop in the west direction and a cafe in the east direction. Moving in to the main building, the centre facility that includes the pool, changing room and the sitting area will remain the same. However, the area for the gym in the north-most region will be extended in the east direction, covering the empty area above the old outdoor courts.

The outdoor courts on the western area will be replaced by a leisure pool, along with the addition of a changing room in the south-western area. The old eastern outdoor courts will be demolished, making way for a new sports hall beside the extended gym, accompanied by two adjacent dance studios and a changing room in the south-eastern area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all key features of the redevelopment plan. You have successfully identified the major changes, such as the replacement of outdoor courts with a leisure pool and sports hall, and the expansion of the gym and reception area. The overview provides a clear summary of the main trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, you mention the central facility remains the same, which is a good observation. The report is well-structured and addresses the prompt comprehensively, providing a clear comparison between the current and future layouts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow a spatial progression. Cohesive devices such as 'Starting from the entrance', 'Moving in to the main building', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general overview from the specific details. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the current and proposed layouts is consistently maintained throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and plans, such as 'redevelopment', 'demolished', 'adjacent', and 'expanded'. The word choice is generally precise and fits the context well. There are no significant errors in word formation or collocation that impede meaning. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for common verbs like 'constructed' or 'replaced' to add variety and demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is generally handled well. There are a few minor slips, such as 'in comparision to' (spelling) and 'along both the directions' (slightly unnatural phrasing). However, these errors are infrequent and do not interfere with communication. The use of passive voice to describe the changes is appropriate for this type of task, showing good control over the necessary grammatical forms for academic writing.
