IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagrams illustrates the present and future layout of a university's sports center.

Overall, the sports center will undergo a major transformation, including advanced amenities such as a cafe, a sports shop and a dance studio.

Currently, constructed area is small with 2 outdoor courts, one in east and other in west. After entering the sports center, there is a reception in front and a 25m pool behind the reception. There is a seating area in east of pool, changing room in west and gym in north.

In future, outdoor courts will be replaced with numerous constructed areas. The reception, pool, gym and seating place will stay at their previous locations, however, the gym will be made wider. In west, next to entrance, there will be a sports shop and a changing room. There will be a leisure pool in west replacing the current western outdoor court. In east, next to entrance, there will be a cafe and a changing room. There will be a sports hall and two dance studios in east replacing the current eastern outdoor court.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the sports centre's transformation. You have provided a clear overview and effectively contrasted the current layout with the proposed redevelopment. The key changes, such as the addition of the leisure pool, sports hall, and dance studios, are accurately reported. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more precise comparisons; for example, instead of stating the gym will be 'made wider', you could describe the specific expansion relative to its original footprint. Overall, the information is well-selected and covers all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the 'current' and 'future' states. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'however' and 'in future', to link your points. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is more precise. For instance, 'in east of pool' lacks an article, and the transition between the description of the current layout and the future changes could be smoother to avoid a slightly mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'transformation', 'amenities', and 'redevelopment' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'constructed area is small' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'seating place' (where 'seating area' would be more standard). While you successfully convey the necessary information, the vocabulary is somewhat functional. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to architectural changes or spatial descriptions, such as 'the footprint of the gym will be extended' or 'the outdoor courts will be repurposed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some noticeable grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'in east' instead of 'in the east', 'in west' instead of 'in the west') and subject-verb agreement in the opening sentence ('The diagrams illustrates'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on consistent use of articles when describing locations and ensure that your subjects and verbs agree. The sentence structures are generally clear, but increasing the variety of complex sentences would enhance your range.
