IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

THE BLUEPRINT ILLUSTRATE THE LAYOUT OF A UNIVERSITY'S SPORTS CENTRE NOW, HOW IT WILL LOOK AFTER REDEVELOPMENT. OVERALL, MAJORITY OF FEATURES WILL BE EXTENDED AND BOTH THE OUTDOOR COURTS WILL BE REPLACED BY LEISURE POOL AND DANCE STUDIO. FEW THINGS LIKE 25M POOL AND CHANGING ROOM WILL REMAIN THE SAME EVEN AFTER REDEVELOPMENT.

ON THE ONE HAND, AT PRESENT, THE RECEPTION IS IN FRONT OF THE ENTRANCE. FROM THERE, ON THE LEFT A CHANGING ROOM AND ON THE RIGHT A SEATING IS AVAILABLE, FROM THE CHANGING ROOM A 25M POOL IS ON ITS RIGHT AT THE CENTER OF THE BUILDING. BEHIND THE POOL A GYM IS THER AND OUTSIDE THE FACILITY ON BOTH THE SIDES OUTSIDE COURTS ARE THERE IN WEST AND IN THE EAST.

ON THE OTHER HAND, IN FUTURE, THE FACILITY WILL BE EXTENDED AND BOTH THE COURTS WILL BE DEMOLISHED, FURTHERMORE, LEISURE POOL WILL BE ADDED IN NORTH-WEST OF THE UNIVERSITY AND BESIDE IT A CHANGING ROOM WILL BE ADDED. ON THE RIGHT, SPORTS HALL AND DANCE STUDIO WILL BE A MAJOR UPGRADE TO THE UNIVERSITY ON THE NORTH-EAST OF THE SPORTS CENTRE. SPORTS SHOP IN THE LEFT AND CAFE ON THE RIGHT OF THE ENTRANCE WILL BE ADDED. HOWEVER, THE CENTER OF THE CENTRE WILL REMAIN THE SAME AS BEFORE.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the sports centre layout. You successfully identified the main changes, such as the removal of outdoor courts and the addition of new facilities like the leisure pool and dance studio. However, the overview is slightly weak; while it mentions some changes, it could be more analytical by highlighting the shift from an outdoor-focused facility to a more comprehensive indoor complex. The description of the layout is generally accurate, though some spatial references (e.g., 'in the west and in the east') are slightly imprecise. Overall, you have provided a clear summary of the main trends and specific details required by the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, a summary of the current layout, and a summary of the future layout. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct sections. You use some cohesive devices such as 'on the one hand,' 'on the other hand,' and 'furthermore' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the current layout description and the future layout could be more sophisticated. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment,' 'demolished,' and 'facility' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'blueprint' (which is usually a technical drawing rather than a layout plan) and 'majority of features' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). You also have some repetitive phrasing, such as 'will be added' appearing multiple times. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and precise collocations to describe the changes, such as 'converted into' or 'replaced by'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The blueprint illustrate') and missing articles ('a seating is available'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'behind the pool a gym is ther'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with capitalization and sentence structure. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that articles are used correctly before nouns. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also help improve your score.
