IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plans illustrate the outline of a university's sports centre before and after its refurbishment.
Overall, the university sports centre will undergo several significant changes. The outdoor courts of the sports centre will be converted into a leisure pool and a sports hall with two dance studios. In addition, several new facilities will be added, such as a sports shop and a cafe.
An analysis of the plans reveals that the outdoor court, which is on the west side of the centre will be converted into a leisure pool. Similarly, the outdoor court on the east side of centre will be converted into a sports hall, with two dance studios added on its eastern side. Moreover, the gym, seating, and reception will remain unchanged, while the original changing room will be relocated to the southwest corner of the centre.
From the plans, it is evident that the changing room will be added to the southwest side of the centre. Furthermore, a sports shop on the lefts side of the reception, and a cafe on the right side will be added. Another changing room will be added on the southeast side of the sports centre.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all key features of the provided plans. You have successfully identified the major changes, such as the conversion of outdoor courts into a leisure pool and sports hall, and the addition of new facilities like the cafe and sports shop. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant transformations. You have also made relevant comparisons between the 'now' and 'after' layouts. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial references are precise; for instance, you mention a changing room being relocated to the southwest, but the plan also shows a new changing room in the southeast, which you correctly noted later. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a logical selection of information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction, the overview, and the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Similarly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas. The flow is logical, moving from the general changes to specific facility locations. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly smoother to avoid repeating the mention of the changing room. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'undergo', 'converted', 'refurbishment', and 'relocated'. The terminology is accurate and appropriate for a report on a floor plan. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly. To improve further, you could incorporate more varied synonyms for 'added' or 'converted' to demonstrate a wider lexical range. For example, using 'transformed into' or 'replaced by' would add variety to your descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'The outdoor court, which is on the west side of the centre will be converted into a leisure pool.' Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence structure is clear. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. To aim for a higher band, ensure consistent use of articles and prepositions, such as 'on the left side' instead of 'on the lefts side'. Overall, the grammar is strong and supports the clarity of your report.
