IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The plans illustrate the outline of a university's sports centre before and after its refurbishment.
Overall, the university sports centre will undergo several significant changes. The outdoor courts of the sports centre will be converted into a leisure pool and a sports hall with two dance studios. In addition, several new facilities will be added, such as a sports shop and a cafe.
An analysis of the plans reveals that the outdoor court, which is on the west side of the centre will be converted into a leisure pool. Similarly, the outdoor court on the east side of the centre will be converted into a sports hall, with two dance studios added on its eastern side. Moreover, the gym, seating, and reception will remain unchanged, while the original changing room will be relocated to the southwest corner of the centre.
From the plans, it is evident that the changing room will be added to the southwest side of the centre. Furthermore, a sports shop on the left side of the reception, and a cafe on the right side will be added. Another changing room will be added on the southeast side of the sports centre.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the redevelopment plan. You have clearly highlighted the conversion of outdoor courts into a leisure pool and sports hall, as well as the addition of new facilities like the shop and cafe. The overview is concise and effectively summarizes the key changes. However, the description of the changing rooms is slightly repetitive and could be more integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial relationships are described with maximum precision, as some descriptions like 'left side' and 'right side' are slightly informal compared to 'western' or 'eastern' wings.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Similarly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is easy to follow, moving from a general summary to specific details about the layout changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The flow is generally smooth, though the transition between the second and third body paragraphs could be slightly more refined to avoid a sense of list-like reporting.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'refurbishment', 'converted', 'relocated', and 'undergo'. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks a degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. For instance, instead of 'added', you could use 'incorporated' or 'integrated'. The word choice is precise enough to convey the intended meaning without ambiguity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use passive voice effectively to describe the changes, such as 'will be converted' and 'will be added', which is appropriate for this task type. Grammar is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. Punctuation is handled well throughout the text. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as participial phrases or more varied subordinate clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
