Overall Band Score: 6.5 · Cambridge IELTS 13 · 2026-08-18

IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two diagrams delineate the current layout and the future developments of a university's sports centre.

Overall, it is clear that several changes will happen in the future, which includes a new cafe, a new sports shop, a new leisure pool facility and two new changing rooms.

Looking at the layout in more detail, the gym area will be expanded on the eastern side, which will be connected to a new sports hall and two new dance studios. The outdoor courts, which are currently located in the north-west corner will be replaced by a leisure pool. The leisure pool will be connected to a new changing room and a sports shop.

According to the diagram, a new café will be built near the reception and a new changing room will be built next to the café. In contrast, the 25m pool, gym position, reception, a changing room, seating area, and the entrance will remain constant.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively covers the main features of the sports centre redevelopment. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the expansion of the gym, the addition of the leisure pool, and the new facilities like the cafe and shop. The overview provides a clear summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are fully developed; for instance, you mention the gym expansion but could more explicitly contrast its current size with the future layout. Overall, the information is well-selected and the task requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location and type of change. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Looking at the layout in more detail' and 'In contrast' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific details. To improve, you could vary your linking phrases slightly more to avoid a mechanical feel, but the current structure is effective and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'delineate', 'redevelopment', 'expanded', and 'remain constant'. The language is precise enough to convey the information clearly. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common synonyms for movement and change, such as 'undergo a transformation' or 'be relocated'. The current vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, though it remains somewhat standard.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use passive voice appropriately for describing the plans (e.g., 'will be built', 'will be replaced'). There are very few grammatical errors, and punctuation is generally accurate. The sentences are clear and easy to read. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional or participial phrases, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility, although your current control is already quite strong.
