IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Future refurbishment plan for an institute's sport centre's layout is porvided.

Basically the new proposed version will be a bit more complex and supports indoor games. The new version will include few more indoor games in place of outdoor courts, completely removing outdoor activities from sports centre.

The west outdoor court will be replaced by a leisure pool. Two additional changing room will also be added at lower extreme ends of the centre. The refurbishment will also commercialize the sports centre upto some extent by constructing a sports shop and a cafe, right near to the entrance.

The central area of the sports centre, including Gym, central changing room, reception, seating and 25m pool, will remain almost unchanged, while outdoor courts on east side will be replaced by two new dance studios at the very North-East corner of the sport centre.

In summary, the new version will facilitate athletes in many ways, for example, they can buy their stuff and can have a good meal right after their physical activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the redevelopment plan, identifying key changes such as the leisure pool, dance studios, and commercial additions. However, the overview is somewhat informal and lacks a clear, professional tone. While the main features are highlighted, the description of the 'central area' remaining 'almost unchanged' is accurate, but the report could benefit from more precise comparative language. The summary at the end is slightly subjective ('good meal') rather than purely analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview provides a more comprehensive summary of the most significant trends, such as the shift from outdoor to indoor-focused facilities.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of the changes. The use of transition signals like 'In summary' and 'while' helps connect ideas. However, some cohesive devices are used in a slightly mechanical way, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise. For instance, the phrase 'at lower extreme ends' is vague. The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the 'additions' and 'removals' more distinctly to enhance the logical structure of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'commercialize' and 'refurbishment', which are appropriate. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'porvided' (spelling) and 'stuff' (too informal for an academic report). The phrase 'at lower extreme ends' is also somewhat awkward. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding informal, conversational language in a formal report setting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Two additional changing room will also be added' (subject-verb agreement) and 'upto' (should be two words). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure occasionally feels repetitive. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for articles and pluralization would significantly enhance the accuracy of the response.
