Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the sports centre redevelopment, identifying key additions like the cafe and dance studio, and noting what remains unchanged. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the task is addressed, the reporting of information is occasionally imprecise, such as the confusing description of the new layout where the student mentions the 'sports hall' being added, which is not clearly supported by the provided visual data. To reach a higher band, the response should focus on a more structured comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states, ensuring that the spatial relationships are described with greater clarity and accuracy.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the current layout to the future one. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'like this way numerous changes will noticeable'. There are also issues with referencing; for example, the transition between the description of the old and new layouts is abrupt. The flow of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of sophisticated linking words. Improving the variety and naturalness of transitions would significantly enhance the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'present', 'located', and 'place'. There are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations, such as 'renovation internal interior' and 'new leisure pool will establish'. The student attempts to use specific terminology related to the map, but the lack of precision in word formation (e.g., 'designes', 'seating arrangement's') limits the effectiveness of the communication. To improve, the student should focus on learning more precise verbs for describing spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'converted', and pay closer attention to spelling and pluralisation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'various changes taken place', 'seating arrangement's is located') and article usage (e.g., 'in middle of the center'). The sentence structures are predominantly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'in that both east and west side outdoor courts are available'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. A stronger focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would help improve the accuracy of the writing.
