Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagrams show the current layout of a university sports centre and the proposed changes for its future development. Overall, the sports centre is expected to become larger and more modern. Several new facilities, such as leisure and relaxation areas, will be added, while the main facilities, including the reception, gym and swimming pool will remain.
At present the centre has a 25-metre swimming pool in the middle with a gym to the north and a reception area to the south. There are also two changing rooms on either side of the reception. In addition outdoor courts are located on the west and east sides of the centre.
In the future, the two outdoor courts will be removed and replaced with new indoor facilities. On the west side, there will be a leisure pool a new changing room and a sports shop. On the east side, a sports hall, dance studio, cafe and another changing room will be constructed.
The gym will also be extended towards the east. However, the existing 25-metre swimming pool and reception area will remain in the same place.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main changes, noting the expansion and modernization of the facility. The key features are accurately identified, such as the removal of outdoor courts and the addition of new indoor facilities like the dance studio and sports shop. Comparisons between the current and future layouts are well-integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide more precise data or specific spatial references where possible, for example, mentioning the specific size of the new gym extension or the exact placement of the new facilities relative to the existing pool.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs describing the current and future states, and a concluding summary. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the use of cohesive devices such as 'At present', 'In addition', and 'In the future' helps guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the current layout from the proposed redevelopment. The flow is natural, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'redevelopment', 'proposed changes', 'constructed', and 'extended'. The language is precise and appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a band 8 or 9. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the vocabulary used is perfectly adequate for the task requirements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Several new facilities, such as leisure and relaxation areas, will be added, while the main facilities... will remain.' Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence structures are varied. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. To improve further, you could incorporate a wider variety of passive voice constructions to describe the changes, which is often preferred in formal report writing.
