IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The maps illustrate the current layout of a university sports centre and the proposed redevelopment plan for the future.

Overall, the sports centre is expected to undergo significant redevelopment, with the existing outdoor courts being replaced by a range of new indoor facilities. The main additions will include a leisure pool, sports shop, café, sports hall and two dance studios, while the gym will also be expanded. Most of the facilities will be brought together within a single enclosed building.

At present, the south-western part of the site contains outdoor courts. Under the proposed plan, these courts will be replaced by a leisure pool, with a new changing room located in front of it. A sports shop will be added beside the pool and will be accessible both from the main entrance and from the changing room. Meanwhile, the reception area, 25-metre pool and seating area will remain in their existing locations. The gym will also stay in the same position, although its size will be increased considerably.

Several new facilities will be introduced elsewhere in the sports center. A sports hall will be constructed to the right of the seating area. In addition, two dance studios will be added in the north-eastern and south-eastern sections, replacing the existing outdoor courts. Finally, a café will be located near the entrance on the right-hand side, providing an additional facility for students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main changes, noting the shift from outdoor to indoor facilities and the expansion of the gym. The key features are well-selected, and the comparisons between the 'now' and 'future' layouts are accurate and easy to follow. You have successfully highlighted the most significant transformations, such as the replacement of outdoor courts with a leisure pool and dance studios, while correctly identifying which elements remain unchanged. The information is well-organized and provides a comprehensive summary of the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a concise overview, and two well-structured body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving logically from the south-western area to the remaining facilities and then to the new additions. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'In addition', and 'Finally' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the referencing is clear throughout, ensuring that the reader can easily track the changes described in the maps. The flow of information is natural and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and processes. Phrases such as 'undergo significant redevelopment', 'proposed plan', and 'introduced elsewhere' are used accurately. The vocabulary is precise and contributes to a professional tone. While the range is sufficient and flexible, there is room to incorporate slightly more sophisticated or varied collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current usage is accurate and effectively conveys the necessary information without any noticeable errors in word choice or spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response exhibits a high level of grammatical control. You have used a variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions ('will be replaced', 'will be constructed') which are highly appropriate for this type of task. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your writing. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication, and the control over tense usage—shifting between the current state and future projections—is handled with precision and consistency throughout the text.
