IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The provided maps illustrate the current floor plan of a university sports centre alongside the proposed changes for its future redevelopment.

Looking at the western and central areas of the centre, the existing outdoor court on the left will be completely built over to create a large new sports hall and an adjacent leisure pool. While the main 25-metre pool and the central reception area will remain in their current locations, the original changing room to the left of the pool will be expanded. Additionally, new visitors will notice a newly added sports shop and a café immediately to the left as they enter the building.

On the eastern side of the complex, the second outdoor court will also be removed. The current gym, which sits in the top right corner, will be significantly enlarged, expanding eastward into the space previously occupied by the court. Finally, the seating area currently located next to the main pool will be demolished to clear space for two brand-new dance studios.

Overall, the sports centre will undergo a significant expansion. The outdoor courts will be completely removed to create a much larger, fully enclosed facility with several new indoor amenities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all requirements of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main changes, such as the removal of outdoor courts and the expansion of indoor facilities. The information is well-selected, and you have made relevant comparisons between the current and future layouts. By categorising the changes into western/central and eastern sections, you have ensured that all key features are covered logically. The summary is accurate and highlights the transformation from an outdoor-focused centre to a fully enclosed, expanded facility, which demonstrates a strong understanding of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on specific areas of the centre, and a concise summary. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a good range of cohesive devices, such as 'While', 'Additionally', and 'On the eastern side of the complex', to guide the reader through the spatial changes. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different zones of the sports centre, making the information easy to follow. The referencing is precise, ensuring that the reader can clearly distinguish between the current and proposed features.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and spatial changes. Phrases such as 'proposed changes', 'completely built over', 'significantly enlarged', and 'undergo a significant expansion' are used accurately and naturally. The vocabulary is precise, and you have avoided repetition by using varied descriptors for the changes (e.g., 'removed', 'demolished', 'expanded'). There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is well-suited to the formal tone required for an Academic Task 1 report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response exhibits a high level of grammatical control. You have used a variety of complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses ('While the main 25-metre pool... will remain...') and passive constructions ('will be completely built over', 'will be demolished'), which are essential for describing processes and changes. The punctuation is accurate throughout, and there are no errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the use of future tense to describe the proposed redevelopment is consistent and correct throughout the text.
