IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the difference between the university sports center's current layout and the one that will occur after reconstruction.

Overall, converting the existing outdoor courts into a central leisure area. The reception, pool, and changing area, as well as seating, remain in their original positions, but a number of new amenities will be set to be introduced.

Firstly, on the northwestern side of the center, outdoor courts will change into leisure pool, while there will be an addition of a changing room adjacent to the leisure pool on the southwestern corner. On the left side of the entrance there will be a sports shop, and there will be a cafe on the right side of the entrance.

Furthermore, there will be the addition of dance studios, one on the northeastern corner and the other on the eastern side of the center. The changing room will have adjacent seating on the east side.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the redevelopment well. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the conversion of outdoor courts to a leisure pool and the addition of new facilities like the cafe and dance studios. However, the overview is slightly weak; the first sentence is a fragment ('Overall, converting the existing outdoor courts...'), which lacks a main verb. To improve, ensure your overview clearly summarizes the most significant trends, such as the expansion of indoor facilities and the reduction of outdoor space, in a complete sentence. The comparison between the 'now' and 'after' states is generally clear and accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized logically, with a clear introduction, a body paragraph focusing on the main structural changes, and a final paragraph detailing additional amenities. You use transition signals like 'Firstly' and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. However, the cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and the referencing could be more precise. For example, in the second paragraph, 'on the left side of the entrance' is clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied cohesive devices rather than repeating 'there will be' frequently. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct areas of the plan.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reconstruction', 'amenities', 'adjacent', and 'layout' correctly. The language is generally precise enough to convey the intended meaning. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. For instance, instead of repeatedly using 'there will be', you could use verbs like 'incorporate', 'feature', 'replace', or 'be transformed into'. The current vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the sophistication required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are understandable, there are some grammatical issues. The overview contains a sentence fragment, and there is a slight awkwardness in 'a number of new amenities will be set to be introduced'. Additionally, 'outdoor courts will change into leisure pool' is missing an article ('a' or 'the'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and work on article usage with countable nouns.
