IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the difference between the university sports center's current and future changes that will occur after reconstruction.
Overall, the redevelopment replaces the outdoor courts with a leisure pool. The reception, pool, and changing area, as well as seating, remain in their original positions, but a number of new amenities will be introduced.
Firstly, on the northwestern side of the center, outdoor courts will transform into a leisure pool, while there will be an addition of a changing room adjacent to the leisure pool on the southwestern corner. On the left side of the entrance there will be a sports shop, and there will be a cafe on the right side of the entrance.
Furthermore, the plan incorporates two new dance studios, one on the northeastern corner and the other on the eastern side of the center. The changing room will have adjacent seating on the east side. Although the gym area extends, stay on the north side.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the redevelopment plan, including the replacement of outdoor courts with a leisure pool and the addition of new facilities like the sports shop, cafe, and dance studios. The overview effectively highlights the main changes. However, the description of the gym area is slightly unclear ('Although the gym area extends, stay on the north side'), which slightly impacts the clarity of the report. Overall, the response provides a clear summary of the information presented in the diagrams, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, but it could benefit from more precise spatial descriptions to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'while' are used to connect ideas. However, the progression within the final paragraph is slightly disjointed, particularly the final sentence regarding the gym, which feels tacked on. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the redevelopment. The flow is generally smooth, though the transition between the description of the dance studios and the gym could be more fluid to achieve a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'reconstruction', 'amenities', 'adjacent', and 'incorporates'. There is a sufficient range to convey the necessary information clearly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a lack of more sophisticated or varied vocabulary that would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. Some phrasing, such as 'difference between the... current and future changes', is slightly redundant. To improve, the student should aim to use more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive verbs to describe spatial changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are accurate, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'Although the gym area extends, stay on the north side', which lacks a clear subject and verb agreement. Additionally, 'the difference between the... current and future changes that will occur after reconstruction' is slightly awkward. Punctuation is generally correct, and the errors present do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on ensuring that all complex sentences are grammatically complete and error-free.
