IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The maps illustrate the difference between the university sports center's current and future changes that will occur after reconstruction.
Overall, the redevelopment replaces the outdoor courts with a leisure pool. The reception, pool, and changing area, as well as seating, remain in their original positions, but a number of new amenities will be introduced.
Firstly, on the northwestern side of the center, outdoor courts will transform into a leisure pool, while there will be an addition of a changing room adjacent to the leisure pool on the southwestern corner. On the left side of the entrance there will be a sports shop, and there will be a cafe on the right side of the entrance.
Furthermore, the plan incorporates two new dance studios, one on the northeastern corner and the other on the eastern side of the center. The changing room will have adjacent seating on the east side. Finally, although the gym will be extended, it will remain on the north side.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively summarizes the main features of the redevelopment. You have clearly identified the key changes, such as the replacement of outdoor courts with a leisure pool and the addition of new facilities like the cafe and dance studios. The overview is concise and provides a good summary of the transformation. You have successfully compared the current and future layouts, meeting the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, the location of the new changing room and seating could be described with slightly more clarity regarding their relationship to the existing structures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the specific details of the redevelopment. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the changes. The referencing is generally clear, although some transitions between the specific locations could be smoother. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow, and the progression from general to specific is logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'reconstruction', 'amenities', 'adjacent', and 'incorporates'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choices are accurate. To improve, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'change' and 'add' to demonstrate a wider range of lexical flexibility. The current vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear communication of the spatial information.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as the use of 'although' to contrast the gym's extension with its location. The punctuation is generally accurate, and there are very few grammatical errors. The sentence structures are varied enough to maintain interest and clarity. To aim for a higher band, ensure that all prepositional phrases regarding location are perfectly accurate, as minor slips in spatial prepositions can occasionally affect the precision of the description.
