Student answer (Band 6.0)
The following layout illustrates a university's sports centre now and below that is the layout which shows the design of the sports centre after renovation and extension.
The present sport centre has an reception as we enter inside the centre. Beside the reception, on the left side is a door to the changing room and on right side of reception is a door to seating area. The changing room also has a door which leads to the 25m swimming pool in addition to that there is also a gym on north of the sports centre . Moreover there are also outdoor courts on west and east side of the sports centre .
After the redevelopment of sports complex there are many notable changes which are to be done to it. A leisure pool will be constructed on the west of sports centre while a sports hall will also be constructed and on the east side two dance studios will also take place and changing rooms on south west and south east side of the sports complex will be made respectively. A sports shop and a cafe will also be available .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the sports centre before and after the redevelopment. You have identified key changes such as the addition of the leisure pool, sports hall, and dance studios. However, the overview is somewhat weak; a more effective summary would highlight the shift from a single-pool layout to a more diverse facility with additional amenities like the cafe and shop. While you mention the locations of new features, the comparison between the 'now' and 'after' states could be more analytical. For instance, noting that the outdoor courts are replaced by indoor facilities would provide a stronger synthesis of the information provided in the diagrams.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction followed by a description of the current layout and then the proposed changes. The use of cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'After the redevelopment', and 'while' helps to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'on south west and south east side... respectively' is a good attempt at precision, but the overall flow between sentences could be improved by varying the sentence structure more effectively to avoid a repetitive list-like feel.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the layout, such as 'redevelopment', 'constructed', and 'amenities'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'take place' when referring to the location of dance studios, where 'be situated' or 'be located' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'an reception' contains a basic article error. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire to include more precise spatial descriptors would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'on north of the sports centre' (missing 'the'), 'on west and east side' (should be 'the west and east sides'), and 'changes which are to be done to it' (awkward phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on consistent use of articles and prepositions when describing locations, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
