Overall Band Score: 7.0 · Cambridge IELTS 13 · 2026-08-22

IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps illustrate the difference between the university sports center's current and future changes that will occur after reconstruction.

Overall, the redevelopment replaces the outdoor courts with a leisure pool. The reception, pool, and changing area, as well as seating, remain in their original positions, but a number of new amenities will be introduced.

Firstly, on the northwestern side of the center, outdoor courts will transform into a leisure pool, while there will be an addition of a changing room adjacent to the leisure pool on the southwestern corner. On the left side of the entrance there will be a sports shop, and there will be a cafe on the right side of the entrance.

Furthermore, the plan incorporates two new dance studios, one on the northeastern corner and the other on the eastern side of the center. The changing room will have adjacent seating on the east side. Finally, although the gym will be extended, it will remain on the north side.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively summarizes the main features of the redevelopment plan. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the replacement of outdoor courts with a leisure pool and the addition of new facilities like the cafe and dance studios. The overview provides a clear summary of the transformation. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise. For instance, while you mention the gym is extended, you could have been more specific about its new size or relative location compared to the original. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well and provides a clear, logical progression of the information presented in the diagrams.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is well-organized with a clear structure. You use an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information logically by location. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the changes. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is logical. To improve further, ensure that referencing is always clear; for example, when mentioning 'the changing room', ensure it is clear whether this is the original one or the new one, as the map shows both. Overall, the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'reconstruction', 'amenities', 'adjacent', and 'incorporates'. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. There is some repetition of basic directional language (e.g., 'side of the center'), which could be improved by using more varied spatial descriptors. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating a few more precise collocations related to architectural changes or spatial layout would elevate the response to a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate, which allows for clear communication. You successfully use future forms ('will transform', 'will be an addition') to describe the planned changes. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede meaning. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or more sophisticated subordinate clauses, to describe the layout changes with greater precision and fluency.
