Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the redevelopment plan, identifying key changes such as the removal of outdoor courts and the addition of new facilities like the dance studios and leisure pool. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the main trends are identified, the comparison between the 'now' and 'future' states could be more precise. For instance, the phrase 'excess change' is imprecise and does not accurately describe the nature of the redevelopment. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant transformations rather than just listing changes, and use more accurate terminology to describe the spatial layout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of the description. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Moving further', and 'Nonetheless' are used to link ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly forced or are used incorrectly, such as 'Nonetheless' when introducing a stable feature. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when describing the location of new facilities (e.g., 'opposite of seating'). Improving the variety and accuracy of cohesive devices will help the flow of the text feel more natural and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors. Phrases like 'excess change', 'more wider', and 'will view after' are non-standard and detract from the professional tone required for an Academic Task 1. While the student successfully uses some topic-specific vocabulary like 'redevelopment', 'renovation', and 'facilities', the range is limited. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding redundant or grammatically incorrect descriptors. Expanding the range of verbs used to describe changes (e.g., 'converted into', 'replaced by') would also be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'map chart represent' (subject-verb agreement), 'outdoor courts has been' (subject-verb agreement), and 'more wider' (double comparative). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'in the opposite of seating'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and the correct formation of comparatives will significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
