IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two plans provide the information about how a university's sports centre looks now and predictions of how it will visualise after renovation.

Overall, the sports centre has undergone significant changes with additional recreational activities at both sides of the area whereas the middle area remains unchanged.

When comparing map today with its future plans, it is evident that advancement along with building of cafe, sports shop will be carried out. In context to the left corner of the centre, the outdoor courts today will be replaced by a leisure pool and changing room. Likewise, we will have access to two dance studios at the top corner with a changing room in the bottom at the northern south region. There will be an additional cafe and sports shop in opposition, just beside the changing rooms at both side. Despite the advancements, the central area near reception along with the changing room, pool, seating will be constant. While the gym will be expanded up to the bottom just next to the dance studio in top right corner. Therefore, after the redevelopment the place will look different in the sides with no changes in the centre.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the sports centre redevelopment, including the new facilities and the areas that remain unchanged. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the plans. However, some descriptions of location are slightly confusing, such as 'northern south region,' which is geographically contradictory. To reach a higher band, ensure that spatial descriptions are precise and consistent. You have covered all parts of the task well, and the comparison between the current and future layouts is clear and logical throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'When comparing,' 'Likewise,' and 'Despite the advancements' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. While the progression of ideas is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of specific locations could be more fluid to improve the overall flow. Overall, the structure is effective and supports the clear communication of the information provided in the diagrams.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment,' 'renovation,' 'advancement,' and 'recreational activities.' There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'visualise after renovation' (which is not the correct context for a plan) and 'in opposition' (which does not accurately describe the placement of the shops). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, these occasional inaccuracies slightly limit the precision of your descriptions. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without causing confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While the gym will be expanded...' and 'Despite the advancements, the central area...'. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'how a university's sports centre looks now and predictions of how it will visualise' and 'at both side,' which should be plural. Additionally, the phrase 'northern south region' is grammatically confusing. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentence structures are used with greater accuracy.
