Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plan below displays the layout of a university's sports center presently and how it will look after modernisation.
Overall, the university sports center will undergo a remarkable redevelopment. New facilities including dance studios, cafe and sports shop will be constructed, whereas some facilities such as gym, reception and changing room will remain unchanged.
Today, there are two outdoor courts located in the western and eastern parts of the plan. Moreover, the gym and reception is located at the northern and southern parts of the plan respectively. There is a pool at the center of the university sports center with a changing room and seating at it sides.
In the future, the two outdoor courts will be demolished and replaced with a leisure pool and sports hall. Meanwhile, two dance studios will be located at the north-eastern corner of the plan. Also a cafe will be situated at the south-eastern corner of the map, while a sports shop will be erected at the south-west corner of the map. Additionally, the university sports center will have three changing rooms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all key features of the provided plans. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the demolition of the outdoor courts and the addition of new facilities like the leisure pool, sports hall, and dance studios. The overview provides a clear summary of the redevelopment, and you have made relevant comparisons between the current and future layouts. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, you mention the gym and reception remain unchanged, but the plan indicates the reception area is actually relocated or modified. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that separate the current state from the future state. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Meanwhile', and 'Additionally' are used to guide the reader through the information. However, the flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases rather than relying on simple transitions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. The progression of ideas is clear, and the reference to specific locations (e.g., 'north-eastern corner') helps the reader visualize the changes effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'modernisation', 'demolished', 'replaced', and 'erected'. These terms are appropriate for a task describing architectural plans. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'at it sides' (should be 'at its sides') and the slightly repetitive use of 'plan' and 'map'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to urban planning or facility layout. The vocabulary is generally accurate and allows for clear communication of the intended meaning throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'the gym and reception is located' (subject-verb agreement error; should be 'are located') and 'at it sides'. Punctuation is generally handled well, although there is a missing space after the comma in 'Moreover, the'. You have attempted to use passive voice appropriately for this task type (e.g., 'will be constructed', 'will be demolished'). Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement would help elevate the score.
